When it comes to high-speed, reliable Wifi connectivity, the hotel industry in South Korea has emerged as the world leader in a new ranking that looks at the best – and worst – countries and cities for hotel Wifi.
According to the number crunchers at Hotel Wifi Test, which collects hotel Wifi data from around the world, an impressive 92 percent of South Korean hotels in their survey met their threshold for ‘adequate’ Wifi.
For the purposes of the survey, analysts looked at the minimum requirements for real-world online activities. That is, a download speed of at least three megabits per second (the Netflix recommendation for SD-quality streaming) and an upload speed of 500 kilobits per second (the Skype recommendation for high-quality non-HD video calling).
After South Korea, the countries with the best quality Wifi were Japan and the Ukraine.
The results tell a different story, however, when it comes to countries with the highest number of hotels with free Wifi, calculated as a ratio of hotels that offer free in-room connectivity.
The leader in that category is Cambodia, with 95 percent of hotels offering free Internet access, followed by Norway and Sweden.
The report also takes a closer look at how cities fare when it comes to free hotel Wifi and puts Istanbul at the top of the heap, followed by Stockholm, Barcelona and Austin.
Stockholm fared well when it comes to quality Wifi, emerging as the lead city for high speed connectivity, followed by Budapest and Tokyo.
The results also revealed overall regional trends. While Asia, for instance, is tops when it comes to high quality, dependable wifi, hotels in the area are less likely to offer free in-room wifi.
Likewise, though it’s more likely that a hotel in Europe has adequate Wifi compared to the US (33 percent more likely), the odds of scoring a hotel with free in-room connectivity is 14 percent higher in the US than in Europe.
In the US, odds of finding a hotel that offers quality and free Wifi are best in Portland, Oregon, as the city emerged the leader in both categories.
Here’s how countries and cities ranked on the Hotel Wifi Test report:
