What Can You Do With 20,000 Velocity Points?

1 June 2015

Words by Carlie Tucker

A great incentive for future travel, Velocity Points can help you upgrade your travel experience. Whether it’s a free flight, cushier seat or better hotel room, there are plenty of ways to put these points to use in making your next trip all the better. So, here’s a look at how you can use those 20,000 extra points.

Free Flights

The Velocity program lets frequent flyers redeem their points for seats on flights, and as long as you have enough points, it won’t cost you a thing. The cheapest option is to opt for a Reward Seat, which are selected seats aboard many of Virgin’s most popular flying routes. They come with a low points price, but they are limited in availability so it’s best to book as early as possible. With 20,000 points, you can secure yourself a seat on any of the following popular domestic and international routes:

Using your points to book a hotel room is also possible in the Velocity program. Virgin partners with over 75,000 hotel brands across the world. Use your points to pay for hotel rooms in three different ways:

•   Pay the entire balance of the room with points.

•   Pay a portion of your room with points

•   Redeem your points for a gift voucher with selected hotel partners. This includes names like Crowne Plaza, Hilton Worldwide and Holiday Inn. The number of points required depends on the hotel brand and value of the card you’re after. For example, a $100 AUD card for the Hilton will run you 17,000 points.

Miscellaneous Spending

If flights and hotels aren’t quite what you’re looking for, Virgin offers a huge number of other options for redeeming points. Ranging from Holiday packages to sport experiences, you’re sure to find something to pique your interests. Here are just a few options to choose from:

•   Car Hire with Europe Car: Use your points to pay for the entire balance of renting a car, or a portion of your total balance.

•   Lounge Entry: Single entry lounge pass for lounges located in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Mackay, Cairns, Gold Coast, Darwin and Alice Springs will run you approximately 10,000 points.

•   Gift Cards: Redeem your points for gift cards redeemable with everything from sporting stores to petrol stations. The points required depends on the value of the card and which retailer you’re after. As an example, you can get a BP Australia $100 AUD gift card for 17,000 points.

•   Charity Donations: Virgin partners with a huge list of charity programs, and you can redeem your points for donations to your choice. For example, 4,500 points will get you a $25 AUD donation to AIME.
