14 Of The Best Travel Videos Of 2014

31 December 2014

Half the reason anyone goes on holiday is to post up photos of themselves with feet outstretched on sandy beaches, clinking wine glasses together against a Mediterranean sunset, taking selfies from skyscrapers and posing in front of ancient ruins. Some folk go one better: the travel video. Anyone with a smartphone or a decent camera can pull off an epic travel video. Of course, there are some professionals out there who know how to put together a cinematic masterpiece.

Here are 14 of our favourite travel videos from 2014,  in no particular order.

1. Watchtower of Turkey by Leonardo Dalessandri

.........................................................................................................................................................

Google ‘best travel video 2014’ and this clip is sure to come up in every hit. Watch it and you’ll clearly see why. Fast paced, evocative, mesmerising, cinematic, dramatic, unexpected... this masterfully shot and edited video captures the fervour of travel like never before.

Follow Dalessandri’s journey from Istanbul to Cappadocia by way of places such as Pamukkale and Ephesus. Filmed over 20 days at 3500 kilometres, this video will have you in awe of the beguiling sensibilities of Turkey. Sit back and prepare to be amazed.

2. Chris Arnold’s Round The World

.........................................................................................................................................................

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cmoHTUQlzA[/embed]
Produced by Student Flights customer Chris Arnold, the budding filmmaker touched down in 11 countries, visiting 16 cities in 35 days with little more than a Black Market Airfare, a passport and his camera. For that floating on air, bubbling with excitement kind of feeling, join this Canberra local on his journey around the world…

3. Koh Yao Noi by Philip Bloom

.........................................................................................................................................................

[embed]http://vimeo.com/97455734[/embed]
Shot entirely on a GoPro with the help of a Phantom 2 drone. This video is mostly impressive for its technical prowess, but also for its ability to give a different perspective to this special part of the world. “Koh Yao Noi is one of the least developed islands in Thailand despite being right in the middle of the most touristic bay there. It's a little haven of real Thailand with just 18km of roads,” says the filmmaker Philip Bloom.

Ethereal, moving and honest – take five minutes out of your day to be transported to a different part of the world.

4. Cuba: The Island Lost in Time by Max Griffin

.........................................................................................................................................................

[embed]http://vimeo.com/105242904[/embed]
Never been to Cuba? This clip evokes the slow-paced vibe of the city, as well as the fun adventures to be had on its streets and within its natural paradises. Watch kids playing soccer on the street then be whisked away to explore the rainforest, plunging into pristine waterholes. As always when travelling, it’s the locals that make a place. This video captures the human spirit of Cuba.

5. The Ridge featuring Danny MacAskill by Cut Media

.........................................................................................................................................................

Afraid of heights? Danny MacAskill isn’t. While not strictly a travel video, in this clip professional cyclist Danny MacAskill returns to his native home on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. Taking on the notorious Cuillin Ridgeline, join Danny on his breathtaking and death-defying ride. Hint: if you like mountain biking this video is for you.

6. Experience The Mighty 5: Utah's National Parks

.........................................................................................................................................................

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlKOcyf915M[/embed]
While this video was filmed in 2013, we only watched it recently. When it comes to thousands – possibly millions of years old national parks – time is irrelevant. These parks are just as impressive in 2014 as they were in 2013, and will be just as impressive in 2015. Take a glimpse inside Utah’s five iconic national parks where you can hike, river raft, mule ride and star gaze all in one day.

7. Mademoiselle Elli & the Charms of Paris

.........................................................................................................................................................

[embed]http://vimeo.com/groups/travelvideos/videos/115467031[/embed]
Cute baby in Paris? Sounds like a new Disney movie. This six-minute clip is every bit as charming and fantastical. Elli’s parents are clearly in the business of making film, and we’re not talking Funniest Home Video make-you-cringe-at-your-twenty-first-birthday type film. These proud as punch parents do a great job of capturing the City of Love with a 12 month old in tow. Warning: cute overload may occur.

8. MOVE

.........................................................................................................................................................

[embed]http://vimeo.com/groups/travelvideos/videos/27246366[/embed]
Okay this clip isn’t from 2014 either, but it’s worth the addition if you haven’t already seen this one!

“Three guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, two cameras and almost a terabyte of footage... all to turn three ambitious linear concepts based on movement, learning and food into three beautiful and hopefully compelling short films.” This is one of three in a series where you get to follow one handsome gadabout around the world. It’s a cheap thrill if ever there was one!

9. Qantas – Feels Like Home

Grab the Kleenex. Qantas does it again with its moody travel tales set to heartfelt music. Follow five different Aussies as they travel home to Australia from five different parts of the world. The ad campaign is based on real stories and is the company’s first brand campaign since 2012. In the bag, Qantas! Good job!

.........................................................................................................................................................

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSoWjC2bW2Y[/embed]
Ever heard of ‘wakeskating’? Neither had we. Watch as pro wakeskaters head to the famous rice terraces of Banaue in the Philippines to first gain permission from the locals, and then wakeskate along these dizzying terraces. Red Bull is the obvious sponsor, but look past the sponsored clothing and enjoy an impressive glimpse at the Philippines countryside, not to mention some incredible sporting talent.
