Natasha O'Connell travels to Cape Town in South Africa. Natasha takes in the natural beauty of the Cape Peninsula and also explores the Garden Route up the east coast. Beautiful vistas, wine estates, good food, sharks and an African safari all make this a trip to remember.
My partner and I went to South Africa in August 2010. We flew into Cape Town and picked up a hire car and drove to Camps Bay where we stayed for three nights. Camps
Bay is a little town situated on the water. There are lots of cafes, restaurants and bars along the water front. The next day we climbed Table Mountain by foot and then caught the cable car back down. We then continued on to Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point) which is where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans are mistakenly believed to meet. They actually meet further east, closer to Cape Agulhas. The views from here were just amazing. The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town is a great place to get a good feed of game meat and has some of the best wines. After spending sometime around Cape Town we then continued onto Stellenbosch and Franschhoek where we hired a bike and visited the wineries.
The Garden Route
The next day we drove along the Garden Route to Gansbaai where we did shark cage diving. We wore 6mm wetsuits as the water was 10 degrees Celsius. It was such an incredible experience, I think I was too cold to even be scared. Our next stop was Jeffrey's Bay, well known for its surf. This is where I got food poisoning from eating fresh oysters. The next day we drove to Addo Elephant National Park where we stayed for two nights. We were greeted by a huge elephant as we drove up to the park. We went on a safari and saw the ‘Big Five' and we also got to ride the elephants. On our way back along the Garden Route heading back to Cape Town we stopped at a Lion Park and played with the baby cubs. We also stopped into Hermanus which is one of the world's top whale watching locations.
