It was a trip of firsts for Flight Centre Mount Pleasant Travel Expert Molly – her first trip in Europe, her first group tour and definitely the first time this luxury hotel-loving traveller had stayed in a hostel. On a recent seven-day Topdeck Eastern Europe trip, Molly also got to tick off some other firsts with Prague and Budapest at the top of her wish list. Travelling from Budapest to Krakow then on to Prague and Berlin by coach, the week-long itinerary was a mix of days on the road and free time to explore the city stops at your own pace.

"The itinerary was great. There was a great ratio of included activities, free days and optional extras if you wanted to keep busy. My Topdeck experience was fantastic - they exceeded all my expectations," she says.

For Molly, Krakow and Budapest were the standout destinations on the trip for their beautiful and historic architecture, especially Buda Castle and the Art-Nouveau Gellert Baths in Budapest. She also got a taste for Hungarian cuisine, sampling deep-fried langos, cabbage rolls and hearty goulash, and dining on the traditional fare at Fatal Restaurant in Budapest. On this particular Topdeck trip, Molly and her coach mates were also lucky enough to be in town for the annual Prague Beer Festival.

"The number one foodie highlight though was the pork knuckle in Berlin and Budapest," Molly reminisces. "Words can't describe how great it was."

Unsurprisingly, Molly says this tour is perfect for foodies and history buffs (the itinerary also included Prague's Old Town Square and Charles Bridge and World War II-era landmarks in Berlin) but what she was pleasantly surprised by was the high standard of hotels and hostels offered on a Topdeck trip in Europe.

"I usually go for very flash hotels but I would stay in all the hotels again with Topdeck, which were in great locations and clean and comfy," she enthuses. "The best was the Plus Berlin - such a cool hostel and the rooms are huge!"

So why this may have been Molly's first trip to Eastern Europe, it certainly won't be her last.

"I wasn't sure what to expect as I had never been on a group tour before, but I would absolutely do it again. Something I would do differently would be to try authentic restaurants every night that a meal wasn't included and also do more of the optional activities," she adds.

Consumed with unrequited wanderlust, I get my fix in 24/7 cities and hippie retreats. I'm still looking for the ultimate combo of secluded beach and major metropolis, and my happy place is a 5-star hotel room all to myself - sigh.
