Shopping has always been Rita Mehta's ultimate adventure. She delights in the smallest details, pounds the pavement for the perfect pair of jeans, views favourite boutiques as a home away from home. "When I finished school years ago, a career in product development and sourcing seemed a natural fit for me," she says. Marrying her twin passions of shopping and travel, the fashion and homewares industry veteran has a blog and directory, The American Edit, that highlights US designers and makers. Here she tells us what and where to buy, State-side, for that unique souvenir.

There are few things I love more than travel, so I'm fortunate that my work gives me the opportunity to do so quite often.

I run The American Edit, a website that celebrates the best American-made products. I typically plan my trips around independent restaurants and shops I want to visit (with a few museums or hikes thrown in), which means I'm always uncovering new and incredible brands and the shops that carry them.

Here are ten of my favourite recent household finds. Everything is manufactured in the USA and sold at small, independent shops across America.
