Finding quality family accommodation in a foreign CBD that is spacious, affordable and centrally located is often a challenge.

But what really constitutes quality family accommodation? Is it a kids club, a splashtastic pool or the fact that kids eat free with a paying adult at the breakfast buffet?

We put New Zealand’s largest city and its hotels to the test to deliver the seven things which make a hotel family friendly in Auckland.

1. Playground

Nothing says “Welcome Family” like a designated play area for the kids. After a long day seeing the sights a hotel playground is a shiny time-to-yourself oasis that every parent dreams of.

The Jet Park Airport Hotel is jam-packed with enough family-friendliness it may make you want to move in permanently, including an indoor and an outdoor play area, a swimming pool and each room comes complete with a toy box of children’s toys, books and DVD’s and a kid’s specific TV channel.

2. Self-Catering Kitchen & Laundry

One of the best things about travelling is eating out at restaurants and trying new foods and cuisines; except if you have a handful of tired and hungry children who have spent the day happily exploring the city.

Being able to feed your children their favourite foods is a quick way to ensure peace.

The Scenic Hotel Auckland offers kitchenettes in their Lightwell rooms, Standard rooms and Superior rooms. The hotel also offers apartments with full laundry and kitchens for extended stays. This particularly comes in handy if your child accidentally spills food down their favourite shirt!

3. Swimming Pool

Kids seem to be drawn to pools the way that flies are drawn to honey; the moment their little eyes see a pool you’ll be automatically met with a chorus of “can we go swimming?”.

The Langham Auckland has a fantastic outdoor saltwater pool that is heated accordingly all year round! Psst there’s also a poolside bar for mum and dad to enjoy in the summer months!

4. Secure Parking

Holidays can be stressful enough, without having to worry about where you’ll be parking your car or holiday rental.

I’ve also never met a family that packs light – it’s just not possible, so having a secure park close to your room is sensational.

The last thing you want to go through is seeing your car damaged or worse, towed! Secure parking allows for peace of mind, which is why it’s an important feature in a hotel.

Copthorne Auckland City offers car parking for $10 per night, subject to availability.

5. Spacious Rooms

While we all love spending time with our family a little personal space while doing so is a must.

Having a hotel room or apartment with a breakout space for the kids to play or for mum and dad to have a cup of tea is a must.

The Auckland Harbour Oaks has 41 square metre open plan apartments – the perfect size for families looking for some personal time on a family holiday. The self-contained apartments are a short stroll to the Auckland wharf, restaurants and supermarkets.

6. Baby-Sitting Service

We all love our kids but sometime mum and dad just need a break from the little ones.

Skycity Auckland offers a baby-sitting service, leaving the adults to enjoy all that the hotel has on offer, such as the Sky Lounge, where parents can enjoy a drink or two in the evening while enjoying stunning city views.

7. In-House Dining Or Nearby Supermarket

When on holidays, cooking a meal for the entire family is the last thing that you want to do. That’s where the convenience of an in-house restaurant and a nearby supermarket can be a godsend.

Park Regis Auckland is home to the Vault Restaurant & Bar, a great dining establishment with a relaxed atmosphere. The buffet breakfast option is sure to appease the whole family, including the fussy eaters!

If you’ve had a busy day of sight-seeing and all you want to do is crash in your room, the hotel also offers a gourmet pizza menu with a room service option.

A supermarket is also located opposite the hotel, so you can grab a quick snack for the little ones when the munchies hit.
