There are those among us for whom the destination matters less than the journey. And by the journey, we mean, of course, flight. Happily, we have compiled a list of destinations to thrill even the geekiest of #AvGeeks so they can have their cake and eat it, too.

Air Hollywood, USA

Chances are those airport and plane scenes in your favourite movies and TV shows – think Bridesmaids, The Wolf of Wall Street, Lost and Modern Family – have been filmed with the assistance of Air Hollywood. This aviation-themed studio based in Los Angeles, with sites in Atlanta and Victorville, has a range of aviation sets, from airport lounges to cockpits. Don’t miss the weekly retro-themed Pan Am Experience, where you can dine amid the magic of a recreated luxury 1970s Pam Am flight.

Boeing Factory Tour, USA

Just north of Seattle is the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour, where you can explore Boeing’s Everett factory seven days a week. See 747s, 767s, 777s and 787 Dreamliners being built before your eyes and admire the newly painted planes waiting to be picked up. In the museum, design your own plane, and take the kids to the Family Zone to find out more about how planes are made.

Mojave Air & Space Port, USA

The Mojave Air & Space Port is an aerospace test centre, where commercial operators design, test and develop new technology, including space flight. It has also been used in films such as Diehard 2 and Dragnet. You can visit the airport on monthly ‘Plane Crazy Saturdays’ and dine at the aeronautically inspired Voyager restaurant. The airport is also the final resting place for many of the world’s aircraft, and this ‘boneyard’ can be seen from miles away.

Underwater 737, Canada

Tucked away on Canada’s Vancouver Island is the hamlet of Chemainus, where in 2006 a retired Boeing 737 was sunk in the Salish Sea to create an artificial reef like no other for experienced scuba divers. Although it is a fairly recent sinking, many species have taken up residence in their underwater cabin. Look for the Canadian Airlines logo on the tail.

Jumbo Stay, Sweden

Make your Stockholm stay memorable with a night in Jumbo Stay, a hotel within a real jumbo jet. There are 33 rooms, with a range of options from quad-share to suites. They all have flat-screen TVs and access to Wi-Fi, with shared bathrooms, although the Cockpit Suite has its own bathroom. If plane-themed hotels are your thing, you might also like New Zealand’s Woodlyn Park motel, where you can sleep in a Bristol Freighter.

Farnborough International Airshow, UK

Every two years, aerospace professionals from all over the world converge on Farnborough for its international airshow. For the public, there are flying displays, a Space Zone, Innovation Zone, shops, simulators and food and drinks. This year’s show featured a Drone Racing Masters championship and the thrilling RAF Red Arrows aerobatic display. The next airshow is scheduled for July 21 and 22, 2018.

Travel for me is about conversations and connections. There’s nothing like setting foot in a new land and meeting people a world apart. From talking to North Sea fishermen in Norway’s Lofoten Islands to breakfast chat at a B&B in my own back yard, there’s always a story to share and a tale to tell.
