Bangkok's Best Sky-High Bars

20 May 2016

While there's plenty to keep you occupied at street level in Thailand's 24/7 capital, it's also great to rise above the hustle and bustle, catch your breath and take in the sweeping panorama of Bangkok. From the vantage point of one of the city's many rooftop bars, it is possible to be in the heart of all the action and also enjoy some respite from the busyness at the same time. Best visited at night to admire the bright lights of the city with a custom-made cocktail in hand, here's where to get sky-high in Bangkok.

Sky Bar at Iebua is one of the loftiest rooftop bars in the world.

Sky Bar

At a lofty 63 storeys above the city, Sky Bar at Iebua is one of the world's highest rooftop bars and certainly one of Bangkok's most famous. It was also featured in The Hangover Part II, and a resident mixologist created the Hangovertini - a concoction of green tea liquor, apple juice, rosemary honey and Martini Rosso - especially for the cast during filming. The illuminated round bar juts out over the edge of the rooftop, offering the best views of Chao Phraya River and the Silom business district.

Watch the sun set over Bangkok from the Moon Bar.

Vertigo and Moon Bar

The aptly named Vertigo and Moon Bar at Banyan Tree Bangkok, 61 floors above the city, offers an informal rooftop terrace with a view. The completely open-plan setting allows you to experience the nightly panorama, while the narrow elongated shape makes for an interesting experience - almost like floating in mid-air. An open bridge connects the Vertigo restaurant to the Moon Bar at the other end of the rooftop space.

The glowing circular bar is just one of the standout features of Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar.

Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar

For a panoramic vista of the city, look no further than Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar on the 45th floor of Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit. The three-level rooftop space contains a lounge, private room and a bar with an unbeatable 360-degree view of the city skyscrapers with plenty of open-air seating and just glass separating you from the outside. The lit-up circular bar is the epicentre of the sky-high venue where flamboyant mixologists put on a show to rival the city lights.

Witness a panoramic view from the Three Sixty Lounge - whatever the weather.

Three Sixty Lounge

Situated right on the Chao Phraya River, the drawcard is in the name - Millennium Hilton Bangkok's Three Sixty Lounge on the 32nd floor offers that coveted 360-degree outlook of the river and the buildings flanking it. While not as lofty as some of the other sky-high bars in Bangkok, Three Sixty offers both an open-air space and a unique enclosed 360-degree cupola that resembles a spaceship that's landed on the rooftop.

Consumed with unrequited wanderlust, I get my fix in 24/7 cities and hippie retreats. I'm still looking for the ultimate combo of secluded beach and major metropolis, and my happy place is a 5-star hotel room all to myself - sigh.
