You don't have to venture overseas to find great skiing and snowboarding opportunities this winter. There are plenty of fantastic ski resorts in our own backyard, catering for all ages and skill levels. Here are three of our favourite Australian ski resorts for you to consider checking out in 2012.

 Hit the Slopes

Beginners and families

First-time skiers and families with children will love Selwyn Snowfields, located in the northern part of the Snowy Mountains. More than 80% of this resort's ski trails are classified as either beginner or intermediate, making it perfect for the kids. There are also a few advanced trails for any more experienced members of your group.

Experienced skiers won't be able to get enough of the many advanced trails on the southern slopes of Mount Buller, just three hours drive from Melbourne. The most challenging of these is Fanny's Finish, considered by many one of the toughest ski trails in Australia. For the extra-adventurous, there's also some intense off-piste skiing available.

For something a little different

As Australia's only ski resort with accommodation at the top of the mountain instead of at the bottom, Mount Hotham offers a unique experience for ski holiday makers. This not only provides stunning views from your room, but also allows you to ski straight out of your room and onto the slopes.
