For most Australians, the idea of Christmas conjures images of sun, surf, sand and Santa in board-shorts. We love the ocean. Then imagine how great it would be to enjoy Christmas dinner literally under the sea, like some kind of elaborate Little Mermaid style themed Christmas? In the Maldives all this and more is possible.

Anantara Kihavah Villas is putting a tropical twist on tradition with an eco-friendly underwater coral Christmas tree this festive season. The extra special underwater Christmas tree has been made entirely from reef coral collected from the seabed at Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli in the South Male Atoll, and the northern Anantara Kihavah Villas in the Maldives’ UNESCO Marine Biosphere Baa Atoll region. The resort group is taking its coral adoption initiative to new depths.

The festive and eco-friendly underwater masterpiece

Back to the magical ‘dining under the sea’ experience – at Anantara Kihavah the resort has a signature Sea Restaurant which is one of the few underwater restaurants in the world. From the underwater windows of the restaurant diners can view the mesmerising coral Christmas tree along with the bright, colourful marine life fluttering around amongst it.

But even if you’re not dining under the sea, all three Anantara resorts in the South Male Atoll will have coral trees placed underwater to welcome guests when they arrive at the jetty of each resort. Guests also have the opportunity to snorkel the lagoons to view the underwater festive decorations, as well as admire their delightful reflections during night-time illumination shows.

If you’re not heading to the Maldives this Christmas, be sure to bookmark the destination as an exciting option for next year’s holiday getaway. Imagine a tropical escape where the water is 29 degrees year round, where you can stretch out and relax on soft white sands with the azure waters of the Indian Ocean lapping at your feet – probably the only shores that could rival Australian’s own pristine coastlines.

 Not your average santa setting

The Maldives does Christmas well. From fresh seafood buffets to being serenaded by the Atoll Angels Choir and entertained by African-American jazz and blues singers, there are plenty of once-in-a-lifetime memories to be made. Stay for the New Year celebrations and you’ll welcome in the occasion under a backdrop of midnight fireworks with exceptional live entertainment. Get in touch with your New Year resolutions by releasing a lantern into the sky at midnight, or attend a themed party – Anantara celebrates the festive season with flair.
