Food

Hanoi street food – Try a street food experience, but if a more polished evening is your target then I recommend Madame Hien, near the Cathedral, or PePe La Poule, in Tay Ho, for a casual tapas-style menu prepared by the Japanese owner/chef.

After Dark

Angelina – Go to Angelina Italian Restaurant and Lounge inside the Hotel Metropole Hanoi or 88 Lounge in Tay Ho.

Play

Old Quarter – Hanoi really is about the people, so stay near the Old Quarter, wander around to soak up the feel of the place and observe life on the streets, or visit the Opera House and Temple of Literature.

Day Trip

Ninh Binh – Ninh Binh, the old capital, is a good option most of the year while the Sapa area and Halong Bay are popular, but need an overnight trip.

Secret Tip

Insider info – Avoid showing expensive gadgets, focus on the people and the way of life, smile, be modest and don’t dress in hippie garb.
