Discover Mexico One Beach At A Time

16 January 2014

If it’s the perfect beach holiday you’re after look no further than Mexico. This is a country that boasts inspiring sun rises along the history laden Gulf of Mexico and dramatic sunsets on the country’s dynamic west coast. Explore inspiring cliff side beaches once enjoyed by the ancient Mayans on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula or grab your book and sun screen and head out to the incredible resort beaches on Baja California. The only problem with Mexico is deciding which fabulous location to go to. Let’s break it down to five of some of the best beaches found ‘south of the border’.

 Puerto Vallarta

Tulum
Tulum is no ordinary beach. This trendy yet relaxed beach situated along the beautiful Caribbean Sea was quite possibly one of the first ‘resorts’ in the world. Ancient Mayans would travel to the beaches of Tulum where they built a thriving city along the stunning coastline. The old ruins and pyramids of this once great city are just steps away from the stunning blue waters which are still drawing people today. Tulum, with its mix of low key inns and luxury resorts offers a relaxing atmosphere with lots of activities to enjoy both on the beach and in the surrounding natural settings. If you’re an early morning riser, watch the sun come up and witness the dawn of yet another beautiful day on the Mexican Riviera.

Playa Norte - Isla Mujeres
Just a short ferry ride from the bustling tourist centre of Cancun is the laid back oasis of Isla Mujeres.  Once on the island, Playa Norte Beach is just a five minute walk away where the inviting calm waters make for perfect swimming and snorkelling conditions. The vibrant aqua water is mesmerising and there is plenty of space for venturing out on your own while looking for your chosen space of prime beach real estate. From there just throw down your towel and begin the sun worshipping! If it’s a little more action you want, the nearby beach club offers lots of great company and fun beach activities to enjoy.

Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is situated on the famous Pacific Coast of Mexico. Popular with the rich and famous since the 1960’s, the beaches here are still a big draw today. While the town itself has retained much of its colonial charms, some of Mexico’s most beautiful resorts can be found in Puerto Vallarta. The southern end of Puerto Vallarta boasts crystal blue waters with plenty of beach activities from parasailing and scuba diving to the more tranquil beach holiday where a lounge chair and umbrella are the days only required equipment.

Playa del Careyes – between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo
This intimate beach nestled in the bay of Costa Careyes conjures up images of a Mediterranean setting. Blessed with stunning natural beauty, Costa Careyes features beautiful cliff tops, lush gardens and a beach so inviting you won’t want to leave. Plentiful marine life from turtles and colourful fish are found in the crystal clear waters and nearby nature reserves offer even more interaction with the native flora and fauna. While this is an area less populated with tourists there are still many beach activities to enjoy yet quiet spots to get away from it all.

Playa del Amor - Cabo San Lucas
Playa del Amor literally translates to ‘Beach of Love’ and it’s easy to see how it got its romantic name. Hidden beach coves nestled within rocky formations and dramatic cliff tops create a most exotic setting – one certainly suited to ‘amor’. There are no services in this remote area and beach activities are limited to whatever fun you are able to create on your own – by that of course we mean swimming, snorkelling and sun baking, but this is a must see destination. Glass bottom boat tours are available to Playa del Amor and the nearby natural arch is a popular tourist site on the way.

Mexico is a land filled with natural beauty and an ancient past and much of what makes Mexico so special is that these two elements often come together in the most unique and stylish ways. From cliff top ruins to stunning natural wonders, Mexico is without a doubt one of the most exciting and beautiful beach destinations in the world.

I currently live in Brisbane, Australia. No matter where my travels take me, I enjoy experiencing each destination from the perspective of the locals. Some of my favourite attractions include historic sites, national parks and architectural landmarks.
