Eastern Bloc Party – Busabout Style

24 October 2016

For flexible travel for the free-spirited traveller, you can’t go past Busabout, known for their Hop-On, Hop-Off bus network in Europe. Flight Centre Robina Travel Expert Katherine Stacey recently traipsed through Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia on an Eastern European experience with a group of like-minded travellers and the fun-loving Busabout Crew – and loved every minute.

The nine-day trip trekked through some of Eastern Europe’s most iconic cities, national parks and off-the-beaten-track destinations took in the Bohemian capital of Prague, Krakow’s surprising nightlife, Budapest’s atmospheric ruin pubs and the stunning sights of Slovakia along the way.

While no stranger to youth group travel, compared to her previous tour experience, Katherine loved the relaxed and carefree approach Busabout offered, with the option to do as much or as little as you want of the included activities. Some of activities on Katherine’s trip to Eastern Europe included a tank ride in the Slovakian Velka Fatra mountains, having a drink (or two) in Budapest’s unique ruin bars – derelict industrial or outdoor spaces that are now hip drinking spots, taking a dip in a thermal bath under the stars in Budapest, and a river cruise along the Danube at night, spotting the historic buildings and landmark bridges along the way.

“The river cruise was just so beautiful,” she enthuses. “But my highlight was a horse carriage ride around Krakow.”

The local food was another highlight. While Katherine notes that visitors to Eastern Europe should be prepared for lots of meat and potatoes, Polish cuisine was her standout favourite on tour. Think pierogis (sweet or savoury plump dumplings filled with meat, cheese, vegetables or fruit) and obwarzanek krakowski, the local Krakow take on the bagel, and, of course, plenty of cheap beer throughout Eastern Europe.

With so many exciting activities built into the itinerary, as well as all accommodation, transport, entry fees and some meals taken care of, Katherine says her Busabout trip was “fun and full-on, with plenty of breaks and beautiful stops along the way.”

“I would recommend this trip to anyone who loves a social atmosphere, but still wants a bit more freedom and choice,” she says. “I absolutely loved it – the Busabout driver and guide were amazing, the places we visited were spectacular, the bus was comfy and the accommodation was central, clean and fun. Be ready for the best time ever!”

Consumed with unrequited wanderlust, I get my fix in 24/7 cities and hippie retreats. I'm still looking for the ultimate combo of secluded beach and major metropolis, and my happy place is a 5-star hotel room all to myself - sigh.
