Eastern Europe Odyssey With Topdeck

20 October 2016

Forget what you think you know about guided tours with matching t-shirts and following a tour guide with a flag, Topdeck do things differently so you’ll experience each destination your way. They’ll take care of the transport, accommodation, activities and most of the food on your trip (meaning you’ve got the freedom to dine where and when you want), so you’ll feel like you’re on a vacay with your mates, minus the hassle of organising everything yourself.

Visiting four Eastern European countries and four iconic cities in seven days – from Budapest to Berlin, stopping in Krakow and Prague, Flight Centre Kotara Travel Expert Natalie Tuccia’s recent trip to Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Germany was a week-long immersion into the history, landmarks, cultural traditions and intriguing sites in this part of the continent.

“We had an amazing guide and driver combo who everyone genuinely wanted to spend time with so rather than being led, it felt like we were all mates exploring a city together,” Natalie says.

From taking a dip in Budapest’s famous Gellert Baths (think relaxing in a natural hot spring spa within an amazing Art Nouveau building) to sampling Berlin’s infamous nightlife and paying a sobering visit to Auschwitz, Natalie and her trip mates experienced a variety of Eastern European history and culture on tour, including being in town for the annual Prague Beer Festival. Obviously, the local cuisines were a major highlight.

“The food on tour was great – there were quite a few inclusions and the restaurant meals are just what you need as a hungry and always thirsty traveller,” she says. “Hungarian goulash, pierogi in Krakow and my favourite, the amazing doner kebabs in Berlin – they are the best in the world!”

Top of Natalie’s highlight reel was simply strolling around Krakow in the sunshine. With a mix of included activities and free time, there’s plenty of choice to do as little or as much in a city as you like on a Topdeck trip. Plus, there’s no such thing as a typical day on tour, according to Natalie.

“Wake up, have breakfast with your new mates, discuss what the city has to offer, break off and explore the city, taking a tour if you chose it. Stumble across a great local place for lunch. Step into the most amazing museums, galleries and tattoo shops in each city. Head to a pub or bar for a beer or taste the local spirit. Meet for dinner or the unofficial pub crawl you all create when walking the beautifully lit European cities at night. Find a bar that doesn't close until the sun comes up, catch an Uber back to the hotel or hostel, packing your bag in a frenzy – sleep can be had on the bus. Next city.”

“There were great options for things to do with Topdeck, but grabbing a mate and seeing the city with no time limitations is amazing,” she adds.

Consumed with unrequited wanderlust, I get my fix in 24/7 cities and hippie retreats. I'm still looking for the ultimate combo of secluded beach and major metropolis, and my happy place is a 5-star hotel room all to myself - sigh.
