14 December 2014

2014 marks Flight Centre's 30th birthday in South Australia and travel has never been more affordable.

 30 years and flying

Today, South Australia has 59 physical shop fronts as well as an additional four "back of house" businesses operating specialist areas such as round-the-world flights and business travel bookings all serviced by more than 300 experienced local travel consultants.

Affordable Long Haul

Flight Centre South Australia's marketing manager, Monica McLaren, said travel is now more affordable and accessible for South Australians than ever before.

"With the introduction of Emirates flying to Europe out of Adelaide in 2012 and the price of flights to the USA dropping considerably, long haul destinations have become more accessible to the Adelaide market," Mrs McLaren said.

The most popular holiday bookings out of Adelaide are a mix of tropical getaways such as Bali, Phuket and Fiji, as well as long haul holidays to London New York and Paris.

"In the last year, New York and Paris have overtaken Bangkok and Singapore's ranking in our top 10 which shows us just how affordable long haul destinations are becoming," Mrs McLaren said.

Flight Centre's South Australian retail leader, Gina Norman, joined the company back in 1996 and fondly remembers handwriting customer invoices in carbon copy.

"We were only allowed to open until 12:30pm on a Saturday and Sunday trading wasn't even thought of back then!" Ms Norman recalls.

Ms Norman says travellers today have it better than ever before.

"Having worked in the travel industry for 18 years I know just how lucky we are today because affordable airfare pricing has really opened up the world of travel to everyone."

"Whenever I see advertised prices for Flight Centre fares to London for example, as low as $1600 in the summer on an earlybird fare, I remember how expensive it was to travel back then!" she says.
