There is something about the cold that can be so uninteresting, until snow is put in the picture. Cold hands, a red nose and bulky clothing all become acceptable and skiiers and snowboarders start throwing out high fives and the mid run fist pumping excitement begins

Cardrona or Cardies as the locals call it, offers something for everyone but is especially great for families. It is New Zealand's favourite family mountain with excellent facilities for kids from 3 months and up.

Josie from Ski Express gives us some locals tips and Cardrona inside info.

We hear that Cardrona is the Southern Hemisphere training facility of choice for many Olympic and X Games Medalists. Who should we keep an eye out for?
Famous regulars include Shawn White, Torah Bright, Kelly Clarke, Sebastian Toutant, Simon Dumont, Bobby Brown, and current Freeski World Champ Gus Kenworthy. Local Wanaka athlete Jossi Wells is a double X-Games medalist who grew up riding at Cardrona with his three extremely talented younger brothers.

The best three things about Cardrona are...

Long, wide ski runs makes you feel like you have the mountain to yourself (the longest run is 4km) to make your legs burn and help you earn your lunch and your apre ski drinks!

Cardrona is a Freestylers Paradise with world class freestyle facilities including 3 terrain parks, 2 half-pipes, an epic 22ft super pipe and Gravity X course, it's no wonder athletes come here to train!

Facilities for kids Cardrona has the best kids facilities in NZ with a licenced early

childcare centre for children aged 3 months to 4 years in the Cardrona Nursey & Kindy, the Ski Kindy teaching 3 & 4 year olds how to ski and the Archway Eastside & Westside for kids aged 5 & up who want to either join all day group lessons or 4 day learn to ski/snowboard programme.

Where is the 'place to go' after a big day on the mountain?
Being only a 60 minute drive from Queenstown and a 35 minute drive from Wanaka, there are so many options in each resort town. For something special after a day on the slopes – head to the Cardrona Hotel - one of New Zealand's oldest historic hotels located just near the bottom of the access road and relax by the large open fires. The mulled wine is the speciality of the house!

Ready to get a red nose and have a ridiculous amount of fun? Why not head to Queenstown, grab a hire car and head to Cardrona with a Wanaka Sky Dive added to the adventure? You'll come back a new person, and the best part is your travel consultant can customise a plan to suit you whether you are romancing, spending quality time with the family or flying solo.
