Inspirational Images Of A New Zealand Road Trip

28 August 2013

Jessica Holmes, a Flight Centre copywriter, recently embarked on a road trip with her brother and her husband from Wellington up to Lake Taupo, stopping off along the way to admire the incredible scenery and charming small towns of New Zealand's North Island.

"It had been a year since I had visited my brother in New Zealand. I was keen to see him, so we decided to use the opportunity to take a road trip through the North Island. We met up in Wellington, spent time enjoying the city's fantastic food and arty vibes, before hiring a car and heading towards Lake Taupo. Even though the destination itself is lovely, it was almost the beauty of the journey that delighted us the most."

Heading Towards Mt Ruapehu

"As we were driving along, we were surprised to notice the volume of snow on Mt Ruapehu. Interestingly, while many people travel to the South Island for skiing, you can also ski on the North Island here on Ruapehu. The mountain has plenty of long runs and even a dedicated beginners area with a magic carpet for kids."

Mount Tongariro

"It's common to see cars pulling onto the side of the road to capture this incredible vista. We stopped and walked over the snow covered terrain for the perfect photo of Mount Tongariro, a compound volcano."

Looking Over Wellington Harbour

"On our return, we went for a scenic drive from the heart of the Wellington along the coast for different views over Wellington Harbour. We took advantage of the beautiful weather and wandered up a dirt track near Seatoun to capture a photo of the deep blue water."

Craters of the Moon

"Just a few minutes from the town of Taupo is the unique attraction, Craters of the Moon. This geothermal natural wonder is amazing. We wandered through the entire park and watched the giant craters bubble and steam."

Lake Taupo

"We'd never been to Lake Taupo, so we didn't know what to expect - it was on our bucket list. Suddenly the lake came into view and we were surprised at how expansive it was. We saw people sailing on the water and also thrill seekers sky-diving, however we just enjoyed our lunch and the wonderful scenery. "

North Island Abandoned Farm House

"Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed this abandoned farm house on our journey. I made my brother stop the car so that I could take this photo. It had so much character, I just wanted to get out my paintbrush."

Huka Falls

"You'll find the stunning Huka Falls at Taupo. Before the water even came into view we could hear the thunderous roar of the powerful falls. Some people were zooming about on a jet boat ride, going dangerously close to the base of the falls, while others were enjoying the lovely rainforest walks."

Wellington Harbour at Sunset

"As the sun was setting and the clouds rolling in, I found this outlook particularly atmospheric. At this moment it was so peaceful. New Zealand is a beautiful place."
