Inspirational Images of Dubrovnik - The Pearl Of The Adriatic

23 October 2013

Nicknamed the Pearl of the Adriatic, the world-heritage listed city of Dubrovnik is situated in the south of Croatia. It's an absolute delight to wander through the streets of the old town, to twist and turn through the alley ways, climb up steps and survey the waters from the walls. Recently, curious Flight Centre team members had the opportunity to explore this historic city that was immortalised by George Bernard Shaw when he wrote, "those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik and find it." These are just a few of the wonderful images the Flight Centre team took.

Birds flying over a central square

"There were numerous city squares where the locals sold their wares. I had to capture this moment, when a flock of birds suddenly ascended into the small confines of the square dotting the sky with beating wings," said Talia Schutte.

The Roofs of Dubrovnik

"Looking out over the roofs of Dubrovnik is a mesmerising sight indeed," said Todd Burton.

An Impressive Church

"What was most interesting about this church is not necessarily the classic architecture but the fact that tourists decided to take shelter from the sun and rest their legs on the steps, " said John Pringle.

Walking on the walls

"As the city is embraced by a huge wall, it stands to reason that one needs to "walk the wall," breathing in the splendid vistas from all angles. Views over the Adriatic were ample with the occasional guard tower to warn the locals of an impending attack, yet with the walls strategically built on the cliff tops, danger was never able to come too close," said Talia.

The city restored to its glory

"Dubrovnik is a walled medieval city with only two entrances leading you through the many narrow cobbled walkways that intersect countless times. A small city you can get lost in, but a city you want to get lost in! Around every corner of every small street lies a new vista to be amazed by. Small market stalls and friendly ambience abounds in this picturesque little gem in Croatia," said Talia.

Overlooking the sea

"I was mesmerized with the old charm Dubrovnik offered. Having learned that not too long ago during the breakup with Yugoslavia it was bombed quite extensively damaging large parts of Dubrovnik, it was impressive to see the old city is back to its original charm - albeit with a few new roofs to replace the damaged war torn ones," said Talia.

A narrow staircase

"Croatia held a certain allure for me and the moment I had the opportunity to visit, I took it with both hands," said Talia.

Simply mesmerising

"I was in Croatia for a little over a week as part of a 3-month driving and camping trip around Europe. The picture was taken from walking around on the walls of the old city. The weather was perfect and the surroundings beautiful, hard to take a bad shot really," said Dave Anderton, a consultant in the Stockland Wendouree Shopping Centre.
