Inspirational Images of the Yucatan Peninsula

24 July 2013

Emi Ono, a Flight Centre web developer, recently holidayed on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

"I was interested in Latin America because my husband has ancestry from the region. His mother always sent us beautiful photos of the beaches. I stayed in Cancun for five nights at two luxury resorts - the Paradisus Cancun and Me Cancun. While I was there, I did two day trips: one to the ruins of Chichen Itza and I also signed up for a guided excursion so that I could dive in two of the famous cenotes in the region. On the other days I enjoyed the beach and the resorts, where everything was included as a hotel package."

The Temple of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza

"It's huge. I still can't believe that people who lived at that time were able to build this. Our tour guide told us some stories about why they built the pyramid. Amazingly you can see shadows of snakes on the pyramid during the equinox. They also counted the days using the steps, so they know when to harvest the crops."

The Ballcourt at Chichen Itza

"On the tour, the guide explained the gory history behind the Ball Court. It was a scary story but I liked the design especially the patterns on the wall; they are very unique. "

Lunch on the Chichen Itza Tour

"We explored the ancient site first and then we went to a nearby restaurant for lunch as part of the tour. The lunch was great; I really loved it especially the Lime Soup. This board was outside the restaurant. My friend Tom saw it first and he was the one who encouraged me to take a photo with him."

The Sacred Blue Cenote

"Also on the tour, we were taken to this beautiful cenote. Other people on the tour swam in the water but I was happy to watch and appreciate the scenery. It was also fun to see people jumping from the staircase into the water."

Heading to the Cenote Chac-Mool

"On another day, I booked a diving trip with Deep Life Divers so that I could dive through a cenote. This path led towards the water."

Cenote Chac-Mool

"The tour guide organised everything for me including lunch, a wet suit, diving equipment and two dives at different cenotes. As I swam down, I had to use a torch to see. I really enjoyed the sunlight coming through the water; it was so beautiful, breathtaking. At one point, we came up into an air dome - the water became a mirror reflection of the dome and I could only hear drops of water. I could also see roots of the trees coming through the rock. I was really scared but it was amazing; I'm glad I did it."

A Beach at Cancun

"This beach was opposite the hotel where I stayed. I wanted to take a photo of the incredible scenery before other guests decided to utilise the lounges. I actually had a nap on one of these lounges; it was so nice with a cooling breeze coming off the ocean."

The Coastline of Cancun

"There was  a staircase overlooking the beach, which was a great place for photos of this stretch of coastline at Cancun. The sand was so white and the water was a wonderful light blue."
