Inspirational Images of Tokyo

22 May 2013

Flight Centre's Head of Design and User Experience, Tiffany Apatu is the first to admit she's addicted to Japan.

"I just love it: the culture, the food, the energy - you know there are just some places you just connect with".

Tiffany travels to Japan at least once, if not more, every year. Each time she stays in either Osaka or Tokyo to enjoy her 'old favourites' and always mixes it up with somewhere completely new. The talented designer recently returned from a 16 day trip where she spent most of her time in Tokyo but also took the Shinkansen to Gifu. Here are some of her favourite memories from Tokyo.

Rows of Lanterns Leading to Sensō-ji Temple, Asakusa

"Asakusa is a district in Tokyo famous for the Buddhist temple Sensō-ji. Leading up to the temple are fantastic markets selling food and Japanese goods and handicrafts. This is a great place to pick up souvenirs and gifts."

Shinkansen

"The train system in Japan is completely amazing. Getting around the city is cheap and easy (with a little planning) and getting out of the city via the super-fast Shinkansen is just awesome. These trains go so fast that, as they pass by you at speed on the platform, you can see right through the windows like a flip-book animation."

Ramen

"Food is probably the main reason I cannot stop going back to Japan! I just love ramen and will try it anywhere and everywhere. I liked this bowl in particular; it feels like it is looking at me!"

Gundam, Odaiba

"Gundam: one of Odaiba’s largest attractions... in more ways than one!"

Rainbow Bridge, Odaiba

"I was surprised to see a replica of the Statue of Liberty standing in front of the Rainbow Bridge."

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

"Shinjuku is the commercial, retail and entertainment hotspot of Tokyo and boasts the world's busiest train station. It is hard to believe that in amongst its skyscrapers you’ll find an exceptional and enormous oasis of lush green gardens and parkland."

Matcha (Green Tea) Eclair, Tobu Department Store, Ikebukuro

"In the basement levels of large department stores, you’ll find an incredible range of sweet and savoury treats. It is very easy to get lose your way amongst it all - but I can definitely think of worse places to get lost!"

The Face of Ueno Zoo

"There's plenty to see and do in Ueno. Markets bustle day and night. Ueno Park is one of Tokyo's large public parks and is home to many shrines, museums and spectacular gardens. Here is also where you'll find Ueno Zoo. The Giant Pandas are the heroes of the zoo and all around the district you'll find panda themed gifts and treats."

Polar Bear, Ueno Zoo

"This polar bear was in a particularly playful mood having no end of fun chasing a ball."
