We sent our favourite Instagrammers, @helloemilie and @jasoncharleshill, on a whirlwind tour of Europe. Here they tell us all about their eight-day Espresso Italia tour of Italy with Topdeck. The small-group tour shows off the ancient wonders of Rome, the Renaissance beauty of Florence, and the fascinating frescoes of Assisi, but it was the captivating Amalfi coastline that stayed with our adventurers. Check out these highlights.

In a nutshell, how would you describe the Topdeck Experience?

The Topdeck experience was such a great way for us to see the best of Italy, from the ancient wonders of Rome to the beautiful coastline of Amalfi. The itinerary was packed full of exciting activities like guided tours or you could take it slow and go off on your own and explore at your own pace. It was such a fun environment to be a part of and sharing the experience with other like-minded travellers is the best way to do it.

You did the Espresso Italia tour – did it cover everything you wanted to see?

With so much history and sights throughout Italy, we were lucky enough to tick off so many bucket list destinations over the course of the tour. We feel like we got the best of Italy, by experiencing the Mediterranean Sea along the Amalfi Coast to the ancient city and historic monuments of Rome and Pompeii.

What was your favourite moment in the tour?

There were so many memorable moments throughout the trip but Positano was our favourite. We will not ever forget arriving by boat and seeing the colourful Italian houses dotting the Amalfi coastline and refreshing lemon granita we shared down by the water’s edge.

What was the best photo opportunity in the tour?

The best photo opportunities we found by walking the streets of Rome. There are so many beautiful hidden parts of the city where you can find your own part of Rome, but of course there are the incredible historic monuments we photographed, like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

What was your tour guide like?

Inga was amazing! She was very insightful and provided us with all the best inside knowledge of Italy that helped us get the most out of our experience in Italy. With all of her knowledge, what we loved most about Inga was how warm and friendly she was. By the end of our trip we felt like we were a family.

What was your best meal on the trip?

With Italy being the home of our favourite meals, we were in food lovers’ heaven! The meal which really stands out to us was the home-cooked meal we ate in a traditional Italian vineyard, where we had a full three-course meal, including the wine tasting straight from the vineyard.

What did it feel like to see the Colosseum?

The Colosseum is one of those ancient monuments you need to see with your own eyes to believe. We woke up early before the sunrise and headed out to get our own Colosseum experience without the crowds. Walking around the empty Colosseum and watching the light from the sunrise glow through the ancient monument was special.

What were your impressions of Vatican City?

We walked through ancient Rome past the Pantheon, through the colourful laneways and across the Tiber River and found ourselves in St Peter’s Square. Although we didn't get to go inside, it was still a great experience to stand in the famous square.

What was Pompeii like?

Our tour of Pompeii was a fascinating experience, which helped us have a better understanding and painted a picture of one of the most interesting moments in human history.

Describe the Amalfi Coast in three words.

Colourful, picturesque, heavenly.

What was the best part about Assisi?

The walking tour of the old town was wonderful, not knowing anything about Assisi prior to arriving it was an insightful and unexpected experience of the beautiful hillside town. Experiencing the famous Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi and looking at the ceilings covered in some of the most beautifully persevered fresco artwork that we saw in all of Italy.

What did you love most about Florence?

Although the weather wasn't ideal, we didn't let that get in the way of our Florence experience when we took to the streets with gelati in hand and made our way to the Duomo, the most famous church in Florence. Seeing the level of decoration first hand, which covers the entire Italian cathedral, was captivating.

Travel for me is about conversations and connections. There’s nothing like setting foot in a new land and meeting people a world apart. From talking to North Sea fishermen in Norway’s Lofoten Islands to breakfast chat at a B&B in my own back yard, there’s always a story to share and a tale to tell.
