If you're looking for adventure, consider heading to Jamaica, a fantastic destination for its balmy days, lush jungle and sparkling Caribbean Sea. This tropical island features adrenaline charged activities that are sure to challenge even the most die-hard adventurer. On the agenda could be swimming with sharks, horse riding, river rafting, tubing, bob-sledding or ziplining.

Here are our top outdoor adventure activities in Jamaica.

 Bamboo Rafting, Martha Brae River

Jamaica's Montego Bay is just the place to try living the high life…up amongst the treetops. Ziplining is a canopy tour like no other, taking you at speeds of up to 55 km an hour on some of the Caribbean's longest lines nearly fifteen metres above the ground. Get a bird's eye view of Jamaica's natural beauty below, on ziplines of up to 487 metres in length. Enjoy intermittent eco-walks over a series of inter-connected bridges and platforms.

Dolphin Cove at Treasure Reef
Jamaica's Dolphin Cove at Treasure Reef is good old-fashioned fun and adventure 17th century style for the whole family. Be a pirate for a day in the replica Port Royal Village, with its boldly thematic shopping and entertainment. Get up close and personal with the friendly dolphins in the natural cove, and for the ultimate cove experience, swim with Caribbean sharks. See the Shark Show before you go, snorkel with stingrays, and take a mini-boat ride to explore the lush coastline.

Horseback Ride and Swim
In Jamaica's quaint, quiet fishing village, Sandy Bay in Montego Bay, you can choose a dune buggy or ATV ride, or opt for a unique adventure that takes you on horseback from land to sea. During the two and a half hour ride, you'll traverse the rainforest trails beneath towering mountains, and see exotic flora and fauna native to the region, and a small village and its school before taking a thrilling swim in the sea with your horse, sans saddle, to give you a breathtaking bareback horse riding experience in the Caribbean Sea.

River Rafting and Tubing
If you've never been river rafting or tubing before, this could be the start of something, and if you're familiar with the sport, you'll love the adrenalin charged Jamaican experience. Between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios lies the Martha Brae River, which offers white water rafting, bamboo rafting and river kayaking. Go tubing in White River Valley on the White River, past by coconut plantations, bamboo groves, and the region's native flora and fauna. Disembark to wander through The Garden of Eden and enjoy a refreshing drink at the Parrot Bar before getting ready to go adventuring again.

Jamaica is famous for its bobsledding since the film Cool Runnings made it not only a popular activity but a worldwide phenomenon as well. Take the chairlift and admire the view of the bay below, in Ocho Rios, as you are taken into the forest canopy and beyond, to the peak of Mystic Mountain. Be prepared for a breathless, non-stop roller coaster ride to the bottom.

Xanthe Coward

Xanthe's favourite travel destinations are the Greek Islands, Indonesia, Fiji and Vanuatu. With a background in performing arts, fine food, wine and good times, Xanthe enjoys travel that brings her close to the locals and their leisure activities. Being a theatre reviewer means that Xanthe will always do dinner and a show before checking out the late night city scene and still be up early to find the markets and a decent pot of chai.
