Product Expert Liz Explores The Temples Of Angkor

12 February 2014

Product Expert Liz Hadwell recently took a 9-day Cambodia Experience tour with G Adventures. The expedition started in Ho Chi Minh City before travelling overland to Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh and heading up to Siem Reap. The ancient city of Angkor was a highlight of the tour. Liz and her husband, Jim spent two days admiring the ruins of these incredible temples.

"A couple of months before this trip my husband saw Angkor Wat on the television. Our next international adventure was decided. We would head to Cambodia. To make the arrangements easy - we signed up for a tour with G Adventures. I love them. Their tour guides are called CEO - Chief Experience Officers. Our CEO took us to not only Angkor but we also had a dinner with a local family that he knew. They really do follow their core values of Love, Lead, Embrace, Create and Do," said Liz.

"G Adventures are involved with a project called New Hope. We got to see it first hand when we were in Cambodia. They are successfully helping one of the poorest communities in the area. They have a school there for the local kids, a restaurant where they train locals with essential skills and they also have a medical centre that's manned by volunteer nurses from Australia. When my husband and I came home, we decided to sponsor a family in the new hope project as the visit effected us deeply."

Angkor Wat

"I had to set my alarm for an early start - so that I could see the sun rise over this magnificent structure. We arrived when it was pitch black and it gradually became lighter. This was the first time I saw Angkor Wat with my own eyes - and what an experience it was," said Liz.

A Beautiful Carving

"This was just so beautiful - I couldn't resist taking a photograph. The artisans of Angkor were so creative and so skilled. We are blessed that their work remains today for all to enjoy," said Liz.

"The intricacy and detail in this design is just incredible. Each piece is so small yet the faces all have unique expressions," said Liz.

Bayon Temple

"This is my favourite temple - the faces are just amazing. The blocks are all different colours, thanks to time, weather and nature," said Liz.

Stairs Leading to the top of Angkor Wat

.........................................................................................................................................................

"We explored Angkor Wat on our first day but it was so captivating that we returned on the second. These are the steps leading to the very top. You can climb these steps if you wear the clothing available to show respect," said Liz.

"The artistry is just mesmerising. I'm convinced that he was smiling just at me," said Liz.

The Bridge to Angkor

.........................................................................................................................................................

"This is the bridge that leads to the ancient city. One side of the bridge are demons and the other side are Gods. I was curious to note that some of the heads are new - that's because the original had been removed and sold," said Liz.

Ta Prohm or the Jungle Temple

"This was my husband's favourite temple. This is known as the Jungle Temple AKA tomb raider. It's just astonishing how the trees engulf the ruins creating the unique look," said Liz.
