Local Love: 5 Places Where Queensland Shines

For the final installment of our "local love" series, looking at the Australian states through the eyes of local photographers, we asked Brisbane-based photographer Reichlyn "Rikes" Aguilar to share five of her favourite spots in Queensland.

From star speckled-skies to undersea playgrounds, Reichlyn captures the true essence of the Sunshine State.

Brisbane - beautiful one day, perfect the next

1. Minnippi Parklands

 Brisbane's Minnippi Parklands

"This is my favourite sunset spot. Only 10 kilometres from Brisbane, Minnippi Parklands is one of those hidden gems that you just don’t expect to find so close to the hustle and bustle of the CBD. I love seeing the ducks and geese on the lake and hearing them in the skies! It’s as if you’re somewhere far, far away.

This is a perfect spot if you like to explore, want to bring the kids down, or just have a relaxing picnic. The walking and bicycle tracks, barbecues and picnic tables as well as the football field next door are a bonus!" .........................................................................................................................................................

2. Nudgee Beach

 Sunrise at Nudgee Beach

"Because Brisbane is on a river a wee bit back from the coast, having something like Nudgee Beach a mere 20-minute drive away is just magic. Sunrise here is incredible - given the right conditions, the water is like liquid glass reflecting the trees and surrounding marshland perfectly.

When I’m not down here shooting sunrise, I like to come in the afternoon and bring my furry friend to play in the dog park."

3. Stanthorpe

"Queensland is famous for it’s sun, sand and surf - and rightly so! But there is so much more to the Sunshine State. As a self-confessed foodie, there’s nothing better than going straight to the source of what’s on my plate. The region’s award-winning wines and fresh produce that come direct from some of the country’s richest farmlands, including out at Stanthorpe, are a must.

I love my moments of solitude - being away from it all with no distractions. So, when I get the chance to just sit and watch the stars cross the sky, I take it. The stars always seem brighter and more abundant in the country." .........................................................................................................................................................

4. Mon Repos

"For the endangered Loggerhead Turtle, Mon Repos (on the coast of Bundaberg in Central Queensland) is the most significant nesting site in the Pacific. It’s a truly humbling experience to share a sandy beach as they lay their eggs and crystal clear waters as they glide through the ocean. It’s not something words could ever do justice to." .........................................................................................................................................................

5. Mount Tamborine

.........................................................................................................................................................

Mount Tamborine at the Gold Coast

"Yes, the Gold Coast boasts dazzling beaches but, personally, I love the quietly beautiful hinterland away from the coast. With grand trees all around, winding roads perfect for a Sunday drive and local cafés dotted along the way, Mt Tamborine and the surrounding hinterland is exquisite.

There are bush walks and waterfalls to keep the active busy, but definitely put local treasures like the Glow Worm Caves and Natural Bridge on your hinterland list - it just adds to the enchantment."
