12 August 2014

Local Melbournite and self-confessed suburb wanderer Tom Wuthipol Uj has spent a lot of time scouring the city and its surrounds, curating images for his project "Melbourne Brought Me Here".

Tom's photographic journey showcases all the best bits of Melbourne, including those off the main tourist trail. Tom shared his five favourite photos with us, telling us about the places that inspired him to capture these iconic Melbourne sights.

1. Southbank Promenade

Southbank Promenade in the afternoon glow

"Just a stone's throw from Melbourne CBD across Yarra River, Southbank Promenade is definitely one of my most visited places in Melbourne. I love strolling along the riverside, not only for fitness but also for a great photographic opportunities from dawn to dusk.

It's quite an iconic spot to get a great shot of the Melbourne city skyline, plus there's always a cafe or a bar just around the corner. Eureka Skydeck is not to be missed. I just love going up to the 88th level for panoramic views of Melbourne. It's quite an experience, regardless of the weather."

2. Street Art in Fitzroy

 Fitzroy's creative side on show

"Fitzroy is like a home to me - I always come wandering here for artsy inspirations. Curiosity is the key to exploring this part of town, as all the amazing arts are usually hidden in its laneways and back streets. I love sitting on the side of the street, sipping my latte and watching the trams come and go. Fitzroy is actually known to have some of the best coffee Melbourne to offer!

There's a designers' market I love to visit on the weekend - Rose Street Artists' Market. It's quite a lovely little joint where local independent designers come and showcase their amazing work. I always support them by buying a few little goodies every time."

3. St Kilda Pier

 The iconic St Kilda Kiosk

"St Kilda is such a great little getaway from the city - I just love the beachside culture. I usually stop by Acland Street - St Kilda's iconic pastry destination - for a few bites at the traditional cakes before strolling down to the beach and the iconic pier. The picturesque sunsets always keeps me inspired, and I try to get down here at dusk.

After the sun has set, I often hang around a little while to see the little penguins stumble home from a long day of swimming. They are absolutely adorable! This is probably the best kept secret of St Kilda, and it's another Melbourne sight not to be missed."

4. Bendigo

.........................................................................................................................................................

 Living history in Bendigo

"Despite being a two-hour train ride from Melbourne city, I love coming to Bendigo to learn more about Melbourne's gold rush history. I believe most of the town is kept preserved, and I adore the old buildings and all the classic architecture, still standing tall and stunning.

One of my favourite things to do here is hop aboard Bendigo's iconic Talking Tourist Tram to visit Central Deborah Gold Mine Museum, where you can explore the hidden underground tunnels of a real gold mine - then continue onboard the Tram to a picturesque Lake Weeroona Park. I recommend going in winter and spring, as you’ll get to see beautiful flowers and the colours of trees as season changes – it’s just magical!”

5. Puffing Billy Scenic Railway

 Puffing Billy in action

"What a wonderful way to explore a part of Melbourne's history and its beautiful Dandenong Ranges! I love how the Puffing Billy steam train takes me through local villages like Emerald and Lakeside, with the natural scenic view of the mountains, the farms and suburban living along the way.

It's just absolutely magnificent. Personally, I love going on the Puffing Billy train in the winter months - it  feels so refreshing with a cold winter breeze when the train goes through the forest."
