Auckland's Luxury Hotels

12 December 2014

It would be fair to say Auckland’s come a long way over the past five years when it comes to luxury hotels.

With no new hotels having been built – soon however, there will be a Park Hyatt, Ritz-Carlton and Sofitel So – existing properties have taken the opportunity to upgrade their product and the result has been luxury rooms on the same level as Melbourne or Los Angeles.

On The Waterfront

 Sofitel on the waterfront

Down on the waterfront, Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour – a property once known as The Westin Auckland Lighter Quay – has some of the most spacious, comfortable and modern rooms in town. That’s soon to change, as the hotel is set for a luxury refurbishment in 2015 that will position them on the same level as Sofitel rooms in Sydney and Paris.

For now though, you can expect a hotel that offers a lot from location, facilities and style standpoints.

The rooms feature private Juliet balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, rain showers and separate deep bathtubs, lounge chairs, a workspace, 32-inch LCD TVs, Bose Wave radios and the signature Sofitel MyBed. Many rooms have views over the internal water feature or Viaduct Harbour.

For those looking to splurge, the Junior Suites are the ones to book and are 52 square metres, up from the 35 square metres of a superior room.

Homage To Champagne Sword

.........................................................................................................................................................

Located off the lobby, the Sabrage bar, which pays homage to the technique of slicing the top of the Champagne bottle off with a sword, is the place to head for glasses of bubbly, cocktails, local beers and fine New Zealand wine. Expect a top-notch wine list – including offerings by the bottle and glass from both local Waiheke Island wineries and those in Central Otago, Hawke’s Bay, Martinborough and more – while you can also expect a decent selection of bar snacks.

At Lava Dining, head chef Nick Honeyman’s menu is all-about local produce with a French touch and is a top spot to dine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the evening, expect a wine list that’s as good as it gets in this town.

Charm And Comfort

 Auckland's Sofitel

As you’d expect from a leading Sofitel hotel, there’s a leading spa that offers beauty, facial and body treatments. Here, products used are from French brand Themae and New Zealand’s Plantogen.

As you’d expect with their hotels across the globe, The Langham’s hotel in New Zealand’s largest city has a firm focus on luxury, old world charm, comfort and exceptional service.

 The Hilton has million-dollar views

Fellow water-hugging hotel Hilton Auckland, located on the end of Princes Wharf and overhanging Waitemata Harbour, has 280-degree views stretching from Auckland’s Harbour Bridge across to the mouth of the harbour.

Here, the rooms range from 30 square-metre guest rooms through to 53 square metre suites, all of which that feature 32-inch TVs, walk-in showers, work spaces and Hilton’s plush beds, while some feature the million-dollar views.

Downstairs, Bellini bar is notorious for its city-best Bellinis – as it should given the name of the venue – while it also serves up local wines, beers and snacks including tapas plates.

At FISH restaurant, led by celebrity Kiwi chef Simon Gault, local seafood is the order of the day and it’s served alongside the best views in town. The alfresco deck is a must in summer, while the breakfast here, with the sun gleaming into the room off the water, is a great way to start the day. There’s also a fully equipped gymnasium and an outdoor heated lap pool.

Grand Heritage

 The Langham

Now, while it’s not located on the water or the heart of the city, The Langham Auckland more than makes up for it through its calibre of rooms, restaurants, day spa and recreational facilities.

The Langham Auckland, a one time Sheraton hotel before it was renamed by its parent company, was designed to reflect the brand’s grand heritage of its original London hotel.

That charm and elegance is reflected across the 5-star hotel and is at its best in the Palm Court, a lobby lounge akin to its London sister that serves up a quintessential high tea of royal British proportions. It’s also known for its cocktails – particularly the Martinis and Mojitos – alongside local wines and international whiskies.

Extensive Treatment Menu

.........................................................................................................................................................
At restaurant Eight, there’s an interactive kitchen that offers a wide range of freshly prepared cuisine, including Asian and Indian-inspired dishes, an American grill, local seafood (including an oyster bar) and a desert bar that’s temptingly hard to resist.

Food and drinks aside, the Chuan Spa here is as good as its sisters in Chicago and London and is a facility based upon the principles of Yin and Yang.

Expect an extensive treatment menu where therapists embrace the nurturing and healing qualities of traditional Chinese medicine.

 The Langham Palm Court

From the simplest classic room to the hotel-leading Royal Suite, rooms here are comfortable, elegant and spacious. Highlights include plush beds and oversized pillows, well-appointed bathrooms, workspaces and classic decor.

If you really want to splurge, the Royal Suite includes a living room and separate master bedroom, a kitchen, walk-in wardrobe and jacuzzi. You’ll also gain access to The Langham Club, a benefit for those booking Club Rooms and above.
