Melbourne is Australia’s cultural and sporting capital for good reason. At different times in any given year, Melbourne hosts a variety of exciting and diverse events that take over the town. Here are Flight Centre's picks of the Melbourne events you can experience in the later half of 2014.
Melbourne International Film Festival (31 July – 17 August)
The pre-eminent annual Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) rolls out the red carpet and lights up the city, creating a star-struck buzz around town every year.
Screening a diverse range of movies – from legends of the screen to highly anticipated indies or Australian short films – across a variety of cinemas (ACMI, The Forum, Capitol Theatre and more), MIFF provides the perfect excuse for movie-lovers to spend a couple of weeks in Melbourne.
You may not get to see much of the city what with spending your whole trip in a cinema, but you’ll definitely get a great feel for the cultural capital of Australia!
Melbourne Writers Festival (21 August – 31 August)
Melbourne is one of only five UNESCO Cities of Literature in the world. Each year the city celebrates this heritage and culture by inviting the best and brightest minds to town for the Melbourne Writers Festival.
For 10 days, some seriously fun and brainy types will blow your mind at a number of specifically curated events catered to every lover of the written word from kids to adults, serious scholars to casual readers. Grab a program and have a ponder – there’s something for everyone.
Melbourne Cup (Tuesday 4 November)
And they're off! Dubbed “the race that stops the nation”, the Melbourne Cup and its glitzy carnival gallop into town with parades, fanfare and celebrations that indeed bring the city to a halt.
Dress to impress in your best suit and tie or finest frock and fascinator and head to Flemington Racecourse to be track-side for this internationally renowned race.
Melbourne Music Week (November, dates TBA)
This year sees the fifth instalment of Melbourne Music Week. Spanning 10 days, MMW aims to celebrate the city’s much-loved music scene and the bands and musicians that define it.
The 2013 program brought together a wide range of music genres and artists – 230 playing 110 venues – and more than 47,400 people attended. This November, you too can join the throng and groove to the smooth sounds of musical Melbourne.
