Tomorrow, May 11th, marks this year’s Mother's Day. Chances are you panicked and got your Mum a potted cyclamen again? Or maybe it was a digital photo-frame (who doesn't need another one of those?), the latest best-selling book, or the fail-safe cliche box of Roses chocolates. Worse yet, you didn't realise it was tomorrow and are scratching your head wondering how you’re going to get out of this one. The good news is, you’re not too late for next year.

Here are some suggestions that are likely to make you feel terribly guilty right now, but will inspire a better Mother's Day gift 12 months from now. Whether you’re the son, daughter, husband, sister or grandchild of a wonderful mother or mother figure, surely there’s a woman in your life that deserves a little R&R.

Treat Mum to a wine region getaway

With Australia being home to so many great wine regions, it makes perfect sense to treat your Mum to a sojourn among the vines. In the South Australia’s Barossa, your Mum will gain a finer appreciation for Shiraz and Cabernet whilst admiring the region’s auburn hued landscape. Throw in a hot air balloon ride and you’re sure to get a nomination for son or daughter of the year!

If your Mum, like Kath & Kim, is a fan of a cold glass of Chardonnay, she’ll be truly bowled over with a visit to the Yarra Valley, just outside of Melbourne.Go west and treat your number one lady to the coastal delights of the Mediterranean-esque Margaret River in Western Australia, or follow the Sydney city slickers making the pilgrimage to the Hunter Valley. Here you can bask in the rural delights of New South Wales’ wine region, where total relaxation, with a glass of wine in hand, is the aim of the game.

High Tea

A high tea fit for a Queen

Let her eat cake! At Ladurée Sydney, your Mum will feel as spoilt as Marie Antoinette as she bites into colourful arrays of macaroons and is treated to champagne and friands as far the eye can see. The Stamford Plaza in Brisbane is a High Tea veteran and, with a setting inspired by the Peninsular Hotel in Hong Kong, Mum will feel as though she’s getting two holidays in one.

In Melbourne, there are high teas doused in chocolate, éclairs and decadent tipples all over town, but you can’t go past Afternoon Tea at The Windsor hotel on Spring Street, where they've been serving up high tea since 1883 and the set-up is nothing short of a scene straight out of Downton Abbey.

City Break

There's no therapy like retail therapy

If your mum loves her retail therapy, why not send her on a city break to one of Australia’s top shopping destinations? She can hit up the newest retailers in town in Melbourne, in-between sipping coffee and fueling up on the city’s best Italian food. If she prefers a balance of city and surf, a shopping to trip to Sydney combined with a gander at the eclectic Bondi Markets is sure to offer a truly memorable Mother's Day weekend.

Kick Mum's heels up with a trip to the beach

Give Mum the gift of sunshine, surf and sand in 2015 – and where better to lap up the three than in sunny Queensland with a getaway to the Gold Coast or Noosa on the Sunshine Coast for a truly special beach holiday? Glitz it up on the Goldy with family trip to Australia’s theme park capital, or deliver her into the warm embrace of Noosa’s serene Little Cove beach and surrounding National Park. Further north, you could splash out on a trip the Great Barrier Reef for a few days in paradise on Hamilton Island.

Why not plan a girls' spa weekend with mum next year?

For the ultimate escape, Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain offers an iconic wilderness experience where your number one fan will find herself relaxing a hot tub, looking out at the region’s towering King Billy pines at Peppers Cradle Mountain lodge.

A spa retreat holiday is the ultimate gift, with renowned facilities in some of Australia’s most lush locations. You can choose to send Mum to a spa as far north as Daintree in Queensland,  as south as Tasmania or just about everywhere in between, with luxurious offerings in popular regional destinations such as the Blue Mountains, Byron Bay, Daylesford or even a city spa weekender at Sydney’s Park Hyatt.

 Your mother, the dare-devil

If your Mum is less into having her nails painted and more into breaking them on an adrenaline binge, perhaps the perfect gift for next year’s Mother's Day could be a tandem skydive experience? That’s right – come close to ending your life with the woman who gave you yours as you jump out a plane together at 18,000-ft.

Coolum Beach on Sunshine Coast offers spectacular views for skydiving, as does Mission Beach between Cairns, Townsville, Byron Bay, Bells Beach in Torquay and Sydney, boasting views of the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. She’ll never again be able to say you never take her anywhere.
