When you're visiting a city for the first time, there's nothing better than getting tips from a local beyond the usual guide book suggestions!

We asked Michelle Parker, professional big-mountain skier, for her insider scoop on Lake Tahoe including where to eat, drink and play, along with an exclusive tip for first-time visitors.

Lake Tahoe Lake Tahoe is one of America's premier swimming spots

Christy Hill – A date-night favourite among Tahoe City locals, this elegant bistro has a view of the lake. The food has always impressed me and the location is tough to beat.

Uncorked Tahoe City – A top-notch place to hang, this wine bar is the place to pick up a bottle of vino or enjoy a glass of wine with friends. The staff are passionate about wine and happy to share their knowledge, and the decor and woodwork are beautiful.

Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema – A visit here is the best way to catch a good film in Tahoe City. They hand pick movies and documentaries, and host special events.

Squaw Valley Squaw Valley offers numerous hiking trails during the summer, which turn into ski trails come winter

Day Trip

Squaw Valley – Squaw Valley’s Shirley Canyon is one of my favourite hiking trails, especially in spring. With its endless beauty, Five Lakes in Alpine Meadows is also a great place to hike.

Secret Tip

Insider info – Set the alarm, wake up early and hike up Mount Tallac or Rubicon Peak for a magical sunrise – you won’t regret it!
