Discovering New Zealand’s South Island for the very first time, Travel Expert Tamara Tiffin was impressed by the region’s sheer beauty and unique diversity. From punting down the Avon River in Christchurch to soaking in the thermal hot pools of Hanmer Springs, Tamara enjoyed the perfect blend of excitement and serenity on her New Zealand adventure.
“I was surprised to see just how much there is to do and see on the South Island of New Zealand. The island may be small but there is so much diversity and creativity on offer,” said Tamara.
Flying into Christchurch, Tamara began her adventure with a visit to the Antarctic Centre before exploring the creative city on foot. Heading north, Tamara stopped in at Hanmer Springs before taking time to enjoy the lush landscapes of Abel National Park. It was this spectacular region that surprised Tamara the most.
“Before visiting New Zealand, I had no idea about Abel Tasman National Park. I knew about Queenstown and Milford Sound, but I didn’t realise that such a beautiful beach setting also existed on the South Island. At Abel Tasman National Park, there is a bay that experiences a four metre tidal surge every day. In the evening, I was practicing yoga on the sand flats, and in the morning, I was peacefully kayaking in the very same spot,” shared Tamara.
Apart from the natural wonders, Tamara was also taken by the region’s incredible flavours. One culinary highlight was the food at Curators House in Christchurch, which specialises in fresh Spanish-style farm-to-table fare.
“The food scene in New Zealand is huge and rightly so. They really know what they’re doing, with amazing dishes, often accompanied by local, delicious craft beers. Curator’s House even allowed us to walk through their vegetable garden which showcased the restaurant’s dedication to their craft,” said Tamara.
Since returning home, Tamara has already starting planning her next trip to the Land of the Long White Cloud and encourages fellow travellers to take their time when visiting New Zealand.
“I would go back in a heartbeat. I’m looking forward to taking my family on a motorhome expedition next time. There is just so much more I would love to see and experience in New Zealand. It really is a privilege to get over there and share in it so easily. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to really get to know each place you visit – you won’t regret it!”
From families to adventure seekers, gourmands to artists, outdoor enthusiast to grey nomads, there truly is something for every one in New Zealand’s great South.
