Picture-Perfect Provence Captured By Lauren Bath

If you ever find yourself with an opportunity to take a little side journey, I say go for it. Last minute train travel, late sunrises, cheeky drivers and a few changed plans always equal fun, don’t they? I’ve always said that travel is about the journey not the destination, and these words couldn’t have been more true than on my first holiday to France.

 Framed by lavender

Let me first introduce myself - my name is Lauren Bath and I am a travel photographer by trade. Therefore, personal travel is quite rare and special for me. I love to travel and I think anyone who travels for a living needs to keep this love alive.

Provence helped me do just that. I was shooting for myself and my mum, exploring because I wanted to, and rediscovering my passion. But hey, anyone can be a professional photographer in Provence. It’s impossible to take a bad photo!

I decided to go to France because my mum has wanted to visit Europe and I was in a position to make this happen for her. Our little side trip from Paris to Provence was an unexpected bonus that we’ll remember forever!

 Purple worms!

We first got the idea to visit Provence when we were told it was lavender season. As a photographer I couldn’t resist, and mum was more than keen to see me in action.

Unfortunately, we had left planning a little late and needed to get to Provence within 24 hours to have a day and night there. With some help from Flight Centre, we booked the train and packed our overnight bags.

Upon arriving in Provence, we realised our hotel was an hour away from the lavender and we would need a very early start to get to the fields before sunrise. But hey, I’m a photographer; of course I’m an early riser!

Our hotel was great in tracking down a driver who was prepared to pick us up at 4am for the drive. This was an expensive taxi but, for me, much better than taking a tour bus later in the day.

 Sunflowers and lavender

Here’s where the fun starts. Our driver was half an hour late and we spent a hectic hour in the taxi racing the sunrise. Unfortunately, the sun rose as we were hurtling down the highway and we missed our chance.

When we finally arrived, the fields were so beautiful we couldn’t be angry with our cheeky driver and I was able to relax and enjoy the shoot with mum by my side. We were also hours ahead of the first tour bus and had plenty of time alone to soak it all in.

 Honey and sunflowers

We explored field after field, but my favorite was where the sunflowers met the lavender with pockets of colorful beehives. I got closer than I should have, as I was so intent on capturing every single angle, color and moment. Luckily, I escaped without a sting! When a place is this beautiful, you don’t care about anything else.

 Mum the model

Having mum with me also awarded me a model. I think anyone who meets mum for the first time will see what we created together, whether they want to or not! For someone like my mum who likes planning and organisation, this little side trip was a real adventure and I feel like the travel bug has been awakened in her.

I loved that I was able to take photos and document our trip this way and that we have these memories together. I travel with friends, for work and with my partner, but travelling with my mum was something I’ll never forget. And, before you ask, yes I would do it again!
