Behind The Scenes With Sunrise In Hawaii: Day 4

12 March 2015

Yesterday morning the smiling faces of Kochie, Sam and the rest of the Sunrise team filled out television screens once more, backed by the picture-perfect coastal scenes of Hawaii, courtesy of Flight Centre, Hawaii Tourism and Jetstar.

Now well and truly immersed in their week-long trip to the US archipelago state, the crew was at their best, entertaining with musical performances (some professional, some um ... not so), showcasing Hawaii's Big Island and putting their "fearless" co-host Kochie into the water with deadly predators.

Day 4: Swimming With Sharks

Sunrise didn't wait long before kicking the show into high gear during their third broadcast in Honolulu, beginning with an exhilarating performance by local fire knife dancers.

Anyone who has caught up with the previous episode would remember the final scene of Kochie preparing to brave the tepid waters during a swim with sharks. In this episode Sunrise showed footage from his time beneath the surface, which turned out to be a rather surprising experience.

As you can see, Kochie had nothing to worry about, coming face-to-face with friendly white-tipped reef sharks and hammerhead sharks. After he had re-emerged on dry land with all his fingers and toes, Sunrise welcomed their third big-name music act in as many days to the stage: all-girl group G.R.L.

Although the majority of the broadcast has been taking place outside of the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, every so often we've been given a detailed look at one of Hawaii's other islands. On the second day it was Maui and this time viewers were taken to Big Island with roaming reporter Edwina Bartholomew (Eddie) via helicopter.

After the Sunrise team took a lesson in playing the ukulele, Mark Beretta showcased his skills on stage, adding a little Elvis to the Hawaiian instrument. We're pretty sure Sunrise won't be asking him to headline their next episode.

Behind the scenes with Nat and the ladies

Nat took viewers backstage into Sunrise's control room where the crew works tirelessly to ensure the show runs smoothly.

Later on she was joined by her mum and Kochie's wife to discuss Hawaiian clothing styles.

I love the kind of travelling that is one part strategic planning and two parts spontaneous adventure. Whether I'm exploring my local city or a small town in the middle of nowhere, I'm always hoping to find something no one else has discovered.
