At first glance, Taiwan's capital city, Taipei, doesn't look like a kid-friendly city but in fact, Taipei offers heaps of fun activities for kids. Whether they want to splash around and enjoy some water play, check out some children's art at a gallery dedicated to kids' work, visit the animals at the zoo or just chill at one of the nearby beaches, your kids will come away from Taipei with wonderful memories.

Here are our top five Taipei family-friendly activities.

 Taipei Zoo

Taipei Zoo
The Taipei Zoo, the largest city zoo in Asia and home to over 135 species, is easily accessible via Taipei's family-friendly public transport system and offers an internal shuttle train on site. Animal statues placed throughout the zoo give families several fun opportunities to take photos and the many trees provide much needed shade on hotter days. Visit the Giant Panda House, the Koala House, the Reptile House and the Tropical Rainforest. Get up close and personal with insects in the Insect House and enjoy exploring the extensive gardens and exotic sections of the zoo, which include African and Australian areas.

Taipei Water Park
Taipei Water Park is no ordinary amusement park. It features eleven themed areas, which showcase Taipei's water usage, past, present and future, and offers an entertaining and educational day out for eco-tourists and families. An Aqua Friendly Experience area boasts water fountains, slides, spas and swimming pools and the Water Country Park caters especially to younger children. Older kids and parents will want to check out the Spiral Centrifuge Experiencing Channel and the Friction Experiencing Channel.

Taipei Children's Art Museum
Taipei is one of the few cities in the world that boasts a gallery dedicated entirely to children's art. Taipei Children's Art Museum, located on Tianmu Road, is an interactive space, featuring hundreds of art works by children. Children are encouraged to use their imagination and participate in the creation of new works of art. Book in advance to give your children the opportunity to try drawing, painting, sculpting and mixed media art lessons with professional artists in Taipei.

Taipei Eye
Give the kids a taste of trilingual Chinese Opera in Taiwan with a visit to the theatre. Taipei Eye is a bright and colourful company that prides itself on fusing traditional Chinese Opera with Taiwanese martial arts and stunning costumes and painted faces. Watch the actors apply their makeup before the performance. Be thrilled by the clashing of symbols, the beating of drums and the shrill voices that tell dramatic tales of times gone by.

Baby Boss
Taipei's Baby Boss is a fantastic indoor children's simulation centre - the first of its kind in Taipei - located in Mall 7f in Bade Road. Children from 8 - 15 years of age are catered for at career stations that include IDesign, Fashion Design, Music Studio, Dramatic Theatre, Television Station, Power Station, Bank, Hotel, Ice Cream Hut and many more. Parents must accompany children as they move from one themed area to another.

Xanthe Coward

Xanthe's favourite travel destinations are the Greek Islands, Indonesia, Fiji and Vanuatu. With a background in performing arts, fine food, wine and good times, Xanthe enjoys travel that brings her close to the locals and their leisure activities. Being a theatre reviewer means that Xanthe will always do dinner and a show before checking out the late night city scene and still be up early to find the markets and a decent pot of chai.
