Taking an organised tour through foreign lands is a great way to experience the sights of different countries without having to spend time doing all the arrangements both prior to departure and throughout the trip. However some tour companies take touring to the extreme - by arranging trips to countries that aren't necessarily on the standard tourist trail. Needless to say, these destinations offer a fascinating insight into unique, unaffected cultures.

Here are our top five tours to off-the-beaten-track destinations.

 Myanmar Stupas and Payas

Myanmar, Asia - Geckos
As the country teeters on the breach of abandoning isolationism, now could be the perfect time to explore Myanmar – before the crowds catch on. Myanmar proudly retains many cultural traditions and a well preserved historical heritage; a land unaltered by external influences. For travellers curious to experience Asia from a bygone period, Geckos take tourists through the country where highlights include the Shwedagon Pagoda in Rangoon and the Shwethalyaung Buddha. By embarking on a Geckos tour, you'll also take a Inle Lake boat tour and trek to the sacred Golden Rock at Kyaiktiyo.

Zambia, Africa - African Wildlife Safaris
The South Luangwa National Park is one of the most exciting wildlife reserves in Africa - it boasts one of the continent's largest concentrations of wildlife. The big ticket attractions include elephants, buffalo, leopards, hippos, crocs and lions. Because of its isolated location, the park has been tricky to explore – but thanks to African Wildlife Safaris, curious travellers have the opportunity of appreciating this pristine wilderness through unique walking tours. All walking takes place accompanied by an informed guide and armed escort where there are no vehicles or roads.

Guyana, South America - Intrepid
In northern South America, Guyana is one of the continent's least visited regions yet it boasts significant natural beauty and friendly locals just waiting to welcome visitors. An Intrepid tour begins in Georgetown, before appreciating the beauty of the Iwokrama Rainforest and the Kaieteur Falls. Also along the way, you'll search for jaguars on a safari adventure, paddle down the Burro Burro River and explore South American cuisine and culture.

Sri Lanka, Asia - Peregrine
Often overlooked in favour of its next door neighbour across the water, Sri Lanka deserves attention in its own right. Luckily for curious holiday makers, Peregrine organise dedicated expeditions to the beautiful destination. Along the way, enthusiasts swim with elephants at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage; savour what is considered to be the world's best tea at Nuwara Eliya, watch out for roaming leopards at the Chaaya Wild Resort and experience the vibe of the Pettah Bazaar in the capital, Colombo.

Mozambique, Africa - On the Go
Mozambique in southern Africa is one of the undiscovered gems of the continent. This is an unspoilt country that offers a fulfilling travel adventure. On the Go guide interested travellers through Mozambique where you'll experience the Gorongosa National Park, laze about on pristine beaches and explore mesmerising coral reefs. You'll also have a chance to wander through Maputo, a former Portuguese colonial town.

Lyndon Barnett

Guided by curiosity and a sense of adventure, Lyndon travelled independently to 69 countries on six continents. As such, travel is Lyndon's only addiction. He enjoys with equal measure - scaling the peaks of a South American mountain at altitude, attending opera in a European Opera House or hunting for a bargain in an Asian market.
