Kentucky Derby

Much like ‘the race that stops a nation’, the beloved Kentucky Derby is known as ‘the most exciting two minutes in sports’. It caps off two weeks of festivities and attracts more than 160,000 race fans on the day. This year, Grammy and Emmy award-winning crooner Harry Connick Jr will entertain the masses. So don your best race gear, grab a mint julep and place your bets.

Cannes Film Festival

Italian actress Monica Bellucci will be Mistress of Ceremonies at this year’s Festival de Cannes, which attracts the cream of the acting crop from around the world. While it is technically an industry-only event, you can still get in on the action with free movies on the beach each night. Or hang out by the red carpet (Lumiere screenings) or blue carpet (Debussy screenings) to catch a glimpse of the stars.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

A fragrant wonderland, the Chelsea Flower Show in the grounds of London’s Royal Hospital Chelsea blossoms with horticultural displays by world-renowned garden designers, plant specialists, florists and nurseries. It’s a great place to get the inside track on the latest garden trends, or just take the time to stop and smell the roses.

Celebrities including Brad Pitt and George Clooney have flocked to the race in past years. Former F1 driver David Coulthard recommends Cafe de Paris for a hangover-curing Bloody Mary, followed by a stint at the Casino.

Uluru Camel Cup

Go bush for the quirky Camel Cup at Uluru, to see the mighty beasts thunder around this red-dirt track in the Northern Territory Outback. There’s also boot scooting, markets, stock whip demonstrations, wheelbarrow races, a kids’ sack race and camel-dung-throwing competition. It culminates in the Frock Up & Rock Up Gala Ball, where you can dance the night away on a red desert floor under a starry Outback sky.

Travel for me is about conversations and connections. There’s nothing like setting foot in a new land and meeting people a world apart. From talking to North Sea fishermen in Norway’s Lofoten Islands to breakfast chat at a B&B in my own back yard, there’s always a story to share and a tale to tell.
