Carnival's Legend-ary Cruise Season Kicks Off

26 September 2014

The Carnival Legend is currently out at sea on its maiden voyage after setting sail from its new home port in Sydney on Wednesday. It's hard to miss the Legend, whether you're flying into the Harbour City or strolling around Circular Quay.

If anything, you might mistake the massive liner for a pop-up high-rise hotel – spanning the size of three football fields, complete with rooftop waterslides, a basketball court and mini-golf course on its upper decks.

The Carnival Legend at its new home port in Sydney

The Legend is the second Carnival cruise liner to call the New South Wales capital home; its sister ship Carnival Spirit has been based in Sydney since 2012 and has since earned a fleet of loyal passengers.

As an encore to the success of the Spirit, Carnival's Legend will offer 22 cruises from Sydney over the next seven months, kicking off Australia's 2014-15 cruise season in legendary style.

The floating resort has been Aussie-fied for its new clientele. This means you can expect to see Weet-Bix among the breakfast items, encrusted lamb chops on the fine-dining dinner menu, barista-made flat whites, and a fully kitted-out gym that has earned Biggest Loser trainer Shannan Ponton's seal of approval.

 The Legend-ary WaterWorks on board

There's no shortage of entertainment on board the Legend either, such as the Hasbro Game Show which brings childhood favourites like Connect 4 and Yahtzee to life.

One of the most prominent features of the Legend (and one that guarantees a school holiday getaway to top all others) is its rooftop WaterWorks. The stomach-sinking Green Thunder waterslide could just as easily be at home at a Gold Coast theme park as it is perched atop this mammoth vessel.

Carnival cruise lines has seen such success on Australian shores that CEO Gerry Cahill has hinted two year-round ships might be on the cards, with Brisbane and Melbourne also earning a look into as new home ports.

The perfect Sydney view before you ship off

For now, the Carnival Legend has embarked on a fun-filled summer schedule. It's just one of some 35 ships embarking on hundreds of voyages over the coming summer months, promising a legendary 2014-15 cruise season for Australians keen to set sail.
