Virgin Australia has banned all Apple MacBook laptops in checked luggage due to the safety concern of batteries overheating and posing a fire risk.

Apple announced a voluntary worldwide recall in June, 2019 of select 15-inch MacBook Pro laptops, which can be identified by product serial numbers.

On the Virgin Australia website, the airline has issued an important information notice to passengers that classifies all Apple MacBooks as dangerous goods until further notice, meaning “items or substances that may endanger the safety of the aircraft or guests on board.”.

Extending the ban to all Apple MacBook laptops, Virgin Australia has advised that “due to a worldwide recall by Apple of a number of Apple MacBook batteries, all Apple MacBooks must be placed in carry-on baggage only.”

Passengers flying with Virgin Australia should place any Apple MacBook into their carry-on luggage. No Apple MacBook laptops are permitted to be packed into checked luggage until further notice.

Qantas has also implemented a ban on MacBook Pros in checked luggage, but only for the models specified in the worldwide recall by Apple.

For further information, please refer to the Virgin Australia website or ask your consultant for any updates.
