Earlier this year, Flight Centre's Marketing Manager, Colin Bowman was asked by the Sydney Morning Herald to comment on a recent development in airline travel - Premium Economy. At that time, Colin said, "Australian travellers have definitely taken a liking to premium economy seating as a mid-range alternative, which offers a little bit of luxury for a reasonable price." At Flight Centre, we believe this summation encapsulates our view of Premium Economy.

 Consider flying Premium Economy

What is Premium Economy?

For travellers who'd like to enjoy that extra degree of comfort when flying but don't want to pay Business Class prices - some airlines including Qantas, Cathay Pacific and Virgin Atlantic introduced Premium Economy. Essentially, Premium Economy bridges the gap between flying Economy and Business Class.

Interestingly, Alex McGowan, General Manager of Product for Cathay Pacific was quoted as saying, "The key ... is to understand that it's an economy plus product, not a 'business class minus' product."

What are the benefits?

Generally, airlines offer passengers who fly Premium Economy:

  • A dedicated check-in counter
  • Priority boarding
  • Extra luggage allowance
  • A wider seat that offers increased leg room and more of a recline
  • A greater range of meal choices
  • A smaller cabin which is generally quieter
  • More personalised attention from the in-flight team
  • More frequent flyer points
  • A better range of entertainment options

Emily Sonley is the team leader for Flight Centre's dedicated premium travel team, who specialise in booking travel for Premium Economy, Business Class and First Class.

"Many of our customers are pleasantly surprised to receive a quote for Premium Economy travel that is significantly cheaper than they were expecting. It's all about making the journey just that little bit more comfortable so that you're refreshed when you arrive at your destination – ready to enjoy your holiday," said Emily.

"On the return journey, customers often comment that after a full on adventure overseas, the opportunity to rest in preparation for returning to work is greatly appreciated."
