More destinations to discover
Brisbane is a major gateway to Queensland, particularly the state’s south-east. Generally, visitors either turn south to the stunning beaches and attractions (particularly the theme parks) of the Gold Coast or north to the beautiful Sunshine Coast between Caloundra and Noosa Heads.
Glitz, glamour, a breathtaking skyline and some of the best beaches and surfing in Australia – that’s the “Goldie”, a heady mix of holiday haven and entertainment capital. The theme parks alone attract hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. There are countless places to stay oceanside, from Southport to Coolangatta, catering to all needs and budgets.
Many prefer the more understated (some would say sophisticated) Sunshine Coast with its undulating and curving coastline and more secluded beaches. The real Sunshine Coast starts around family-orientated Caloundra, takes in Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Coolum, ending in the world-renowned Noosa Heads, about an hour or so further north. Beach magic.
Moreton Bay islands on the doorstep of Brisbane are a destination secret kept tightly by those who call the city home. Take a look at Moreton Island and the resort of Tangalooma as well as beautiful North Stradbroke, both just a short ferry ride from the mainland and with first-class beach accommodation, much of it self-catering.
