A 20-minute drive out of Hobart’s city centre will lead you to one of the most spectacular sightseeing experiences you will encounter on your Tasmanian holiday – Mt Wellington. It’s often sprinkled with snow, even in warmer months, and soars 1,270 metres above sea level to offer visitors panoramic views that are sure to take your breath away.
The 21-kilometre Pinnacle Road will lead you to the summit winding through forests and other-worldly rock formations before arriving at the very top where visitors will experience sweeping 360-degree views of Hobart, Bruny Island, the D'Entrecasteux Channel and beyond.
The glass-fronted Pinnacle Observation Centre provides a comfortable space with seating, binoculars and protection from the wind and cold on chilly days. As the mountain summit sits high above the clouds, it can often be very crisp up there, even in the middle of summer, so be sure to take a warm jacket no matter what time of year you are visiting.
If you have a keen sense of adventure you can ditch the car for a while and take on one of the many walking trails of Mt Wellington and greater Wellington Park – they range from short and family-friendly routes to seven-hour return treks for fit hikers up for a challenge.
Mountain biking, abseiling, rock climbing and horse riding are also popular ways to experience this stunning nature reserve. Whether driving, walking or cycling, pack a hearty lunch for when it’s time to rest and refuel. Popular picnic spots (complete with views) include The Springs midway up the mountain as well as the Chalet and the enchanting Myrtle Forest picnic area.
Those without their own transport to Mt Wellington can join one of the several tours that operate from Hobart to the top of the mountain. Metro buses also depart from Franklin Square in Hobart’s city centre and will take you halfway up the mountain to Fern Tree. Check weather conditions prior to your visit to ensure you have everything you need for an unforgettable day out in Hobart’s beautiful wilderness that sits right on the city’s doorstep.
