It can be hard to go past a classic B&B in a beautiful historic house: Launceston has been doing this style of accommodation so well for so long, and the best are leagues above some of the town’s tired motels. But with modern concerns such as the Charles – in the town’s former general hospital of all places – and Peppers Seaport, you can choose modern chic over olde world charm, or even better, mix it up. Among the B&Bs making faithful tributes to eras past are Ashton Gate, Kilmarnock House, York Mansions and Highfield House. Two large and relatively luxe mainstays are Country Club Tasmania and Grand Chancellor Hotel, though neither is five star. There are rewards for venturing a smidge out of town: 12 kilometres north the Georgian architecture of Hadspen’s Red Feather Inn, one of Van Diemen’s Land’s first coaching inns, has been given a delightful French provincial make-over inside. At the Tamar Valley town of Dilston, the River House is a romantic escape with great views and gorgeous rooms.
