Cape Mentelle Vineyards started winemaking in 1970 from humble beginnings – with three pioneering brothers and a mere 16 hectares’ worth of vines. Fast-forward 40-plus years, and Cape Mentelle is now part of the renowned Estate & Wines (the wine division of Moët Hennessy) and today boasts more than 150 hectares, a thriving international reputation and one of Australia’s best Cabernet Sauvignons.
In 1972, Cape Mentelle became one of the first commercial vineyards in Western Australia to plant Zinfandel, a dark-purple grape variety from California. The resulting wine – a decadently rich red – has now become an integral part of the winery’s range, which you can taste at the cellar door. One of the benchmarks of the winery’s success is its dedication to sustainable viticulture and the superior standard it sets for environmental practices, which include shunning the use of insecticides, using only natural fertilisers and implementing water-recycling methods.
Cape Mentelle conducts two excellent general tours for visitors. The 60-minute, $25-per-person behind-the-scenes option takes wine lovers on a journey through the winemaking process and highlights the unique aspects of Cape Mentelle’s varietals. Or you can opt for the two-hour, $80-per-person combined tour and degustation, which introduces exquisite wine and food pairings into the mix. This true foodie option showcases the freshest in local produce and cheeses to further enhance your wine-tasting experience.
During the summer months, locals and visitors alike enjoy movies along with their food and wine at Cape Mentelle’s outdoor cinema. Watch films under the stars in the winery gardens, where a wine bar and gourmet food selection are also on hand. Cape Mentelle is just 4 kilometres from the Margaret River town centre, and the cellar door is open from 10am to 5pm every day. And for another nearby must-see attraction, head to magnificent Lake Cave, with its dazzling crystal formations that reflect like a mirror off the surface of the cave’s placid lake.
