Leeuwin Estate is one of the five original wineries of the world-renowned Margaret River region. Today, it boasts not only one of the area’s most popular cellar doors, but also an award-winning restaurant, art gallery and premier outdoor-concert venue. It’s well worth a visit to taste the local drop, enjoy some delicious local fare and see the sweeping green lawns and towering native karri trees.
Leeuwin Estate is a proud family-owned business, with three generations involved in the winemaking here. The estate produces three wine labels: Siblings, the Art Series and Prelude Vineyards. The Siblings range of wines honours the family lineage, while the Art Series – the winery’s richest wines – boast labels featuring artworks by Australian artists. The Chardonnays in this range have enjoyed great success. On numerous occasions, these wines have ranked in the annual top-100 list of Wine Spectator magazine, boasting scores as high as 98 out of 100. Finally, Prelude Vineyards wines are known for their brightness and readiness for drinking. The wines are available in 30 local and international markets.
Thirsty now? Fortunately, you can try the wines while you’re here. Leeuwin Estate offers a number of excellent tour options and tastings that bring together all this winery has to offer – from the history and complexities of the winemaking process here to the delicious wines, fresh regional produce and full-size artworks that feature on its Art Series label on display in its on-site gallery. If you really want to make a special day of it, book the luxury chartered-flight experience. This will have you soaring over the spectacular Margaret River on a scenic one-hour flight from Jandakot (just outside Perth) before you land on the estate’s private airstrip. Once here, you’re in for more treats, with a winery tour, a wine tasting and a sumptuous lunch or round of golf.
Find the estate on the outskirts of Margaret River’s town centre. The cellar door is open daily from 10am to 5pm. And for some fun for the whole family, stop nearby along the Bussell Highway, where you’ll find a giant hedge maze, botanical gardens and a minigolf course at Amaze’n Margaret River.
