More destinations to discover
Toronto welcomes more than 50,000 Australian visitors annually, and they tend to stay for more than a week. Why not get out of the city for a day – or two? Here are a few suggestions within two hours of the city.
About 90 minutes’ drive from the city is the Niagara Peninsula (and home of the world-famous Niagara Falls and the vintage, small-town Niagara-on-the-Lake). On the same latitude as Bordeaux in France and the wine regions of northern California, this area is where some of Canada’s best wines are produced. Cheers!
Prince Edward County
About a two-hour drive from Toronto, this island county is the new getaway for weekend warriors. Fruit wines have given way to grapes and wineries are making their mark, the beaches at Sandbanks Provincial Park are still pristine and The Drake, a Toronto hotel hotspot, has just opened The Drake Devonshire Inn, in Wellington.
If you hear someone saying they’re going “up north”, they’re most likely referring to Muskoka, the lake-filled retreat of the urbanite cognoscenti that spreads northward from about 90 minutes outside Toronto. East of the city, at just under two hours, are the Kawarthas, another lake-filled district where cabins and cottages and heritage towns abound.
