Making feathered friends is easy at the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. Get up close and personal with 200 species of birds at one of the world’s largest free-flight walk-in aviaries. You won’t need your birdwatching binoculars to view the more than 3,000 birds in their (nearly) natural habitats as they soar and dive around you in this eco-friendly attraction.
Get in on all the action as peacocks strut their colourful stuff across the footpaths, hornbills survey the wooden walkways, enormous ostriches meander past and flamingos tiptoe through the water. You’ll have parakeets of electric vibrancy eating out of your hands and parrots holding up their end of the conversation in multiple languages. This unique experience in eco-tourism allows you to live like the birds – minus the wings, of course.
The Kuala Lumpur Bird Park comprises more than eight hectares of tropical rainforest within Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, a refuge for both birds and holidaymakers looking to reconnect with nature.
Zones 1 and 2 are free-flight areas, meaning the birds are able to roam and swoop as you visit. Common-sense considerations, such as no littering or yelling at the birds, ensure safe and pleasant experiences for winged creatures and humans alike.
Park staff provide one-of-a-kind interactions: you might get to feed a bird that lands on your shoulder or have the opportunity to see live hatchings at the egg-incubation area, for example. The park has also made a home here for endangered species, such as the Moluccan Cockatoo and Pesquet’s Parrot; your once-in-a-lifetime chance to see these rare creatures.
In Zone 3, you’ll find Hornbill Park, along with the park gift shop and Hornbill Restaurant & Cafe. Rest your legs and relax with some local fare on the open-air verandah with views of the birds flying through the treetops.
The KL Bird Park is open daily from 9am to 6pm. Public transport offers you several options for getting to the park. The train stops at KTM Old Railway Kuala Lumpur Station, or, for a more scenic route, climb aboard the KL Hop-On Hop-Off Double Decker Tour Bus Service and get off at Station No 15, directly in front of the park’s main entrance.
