More destinations to discover
Both the North and South Island of New Zealand are laden with attractions, from magnificent natural wonders, to cool cities with individual character. But when visiting Wellington, before you move on, make sure you tick off some regional beauty that’s doable in a day trip or an overnight jaunt.
Queen Charlotte Sound
Take the Interislander Ferry to Picton and head for the easternmost of the Marlborough Sounds. Here, you can do a number of activities: hike or mountain the beautiful Queen Charlotte Track, or take a scenic or “mail run” cruise, popping into bays, coves and onto jetties with mail and groceries for residents. You’ll likely be greeted by excited kids in these beautiful remote places.
Malborough Wine Country
Also a ferry ride to Picton, it’s easy to do a half-day Marlborough wine tour from Wellington. Marlborough is one of New Zealand’s most famous wine regions and its biggest. On the northeastern tip of the South Island, it’s renowned for Sauvignon Blanc. Several tour companies offer cellar door tasting tours.
The Kapiti Coast
North of Wellington the Kapiti Coast boasts beautiful beaches and a vast, wild coastline, endangered wildlife, and the cute small towns of Paraparaumu and Waikanae. You can also head out to Kapiti Island. Go with one of the permitted nature-experience operators who are familiar with the island. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed onto the extraordinary nature and wildlife reserve each day.
