More destinations to discover
Dubai is the glittering jewel of the United Arab Emirates but there’s a lot more to this Middle Eastern country than Dubai alone. The UAE actually made up of seven Emirates, of which Dubai is only one. Venture slightly further afield to find ancient forts and ruins, incredible museums and some mega-fun, from Formula 1 racing to boisterous beach parties.
Ras Al Khaimah
Ras Al Khaimah, with its tourism slogan “A rising Emirate”, is putting its best foot forward as a coastal resort. In winter it hosts a season of beach parties. There’s plenty of opportunity for water sports and fun in this moderate Emirate bordering Oman, particularly at the fabulous and huge Hilton resort.
An hour’s drive south of Dubai, find Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital, which challenges Dubai with its big events and culture. Horse racing, Formula 1 and the world’s biggest and most bespoke theme park, the award-winning Ferrari World, await. It’s also home to the huge Louvre Abu Dhabi, the first outpost of the Musee de Louvre outside France, completed in November 2017 and located on the waterfront of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island.
North of Dubai, Sharjah has a more traditional vibe and is worth a visit for its outstanding museums. In fact, the government has a whole department dedicated to museums and galleries – that’s how dedicated Sharjah is to presenting UAE culture, calligraphy, Islamic civilisation and Middle Eastern art to the world.
