Have a long weekend
The word 'weekend' is attractive enough by itself, but put 'long' in front of it and you've suddenly taken things to a whole other level. The long weekender is a great Aussie tradition - we loved packing up the Kombi van, we couldn't get enough of Bali back in its heyday (and still can't!), and, these days, we snap up cheap airfares faster than we can throw another snag on the barbie.
There's plenty to see in your own big backyard: why not try a weekend in wine country visiting The Barossa or Hunter Valley? If a city break is more your scene, the laneways of Melbourne and harbourside streets of Sydney are dripping with cosmopolitan charm.
Of course, you're by no means limited to this great southern land. Hop across the ditch for a quick visit with our favourite Kiwi cousins, or look east towards the tropical isles of Fiji and Vanuatu.
