Opened in October 2002, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is the city’s foremost performing arts venue with a concert hall that can accommodate 1,600 people and a 2,000-seat auditorium geared towards theatrical presentations. The unique design has attracted the nickname of the Big Durian, while to others it resembles the eye of a fly. The complex also contains two smaller venues namely a 245-seat Recital Studio and a 220-seat Theatre Studio.
Singapore presents numerous festivals throughout the year. Sentosa Flowers celebrates spring in its colourful spectacle, while Chinese New Year is a lively affair and the Dragon Boat Festival sees teams strive for victory. The Mooncake Festival, also known as the Lantern Festival is a beautiful event.
If you prefer cinema, there are three major chains including Cathay, Golden Village and Shaw Brothers.
Singapore Airports
Singapore Changi Airport, 17km from the centre, is the city’s principle airport. Flights from Australia to Singapore generally take between eight and nine hours. There are bus and train connections to central Singapore.
